Unfortunately, it has been a constant in the US that gyms are shady businesses to begin with. NYSC senses it will probably not survive unless they try to squeeze every single penny they can from clients, even if it is not entirely legal. I have requested cancellation of my membership several times now. I have called and emailed several times with no avail. My membership was "frozen" during the COVID19 continegency but they began charging after gyms reopening in NYC, despite my "home" facility in East harlem and the upper east side remaining closed.
Even if they were open, I do not feel safe going back given there are a lot of reports from gym goers that safety measures are not being enforced. Facilities still remain dirty and uncared for.
Overall, it has been a harrowing experience trying to deal with this company and I will not rest until their practices are known far and wide.
This is what I emailed to Michael Rossitto regarding the condition of the Garden City NY (Long Island) location which he manages. It describes pretty well what paying members are expect to endure:
I’m furious with the locker room situation. I go 5 times a week to your Garden City location. It’s near my job and I’m comfortable there. I enjoy using it for my daily workout. I understood when the men’s locker room needed to be renovated, and for the duration of it I used other locations, which I pay for, even though they’re out of my way and I don’t like them as much. (Great Neck is filthy, disgusting and unkept)
Now the women’s locker room is being renovated, and in order for the women to not be inconvenienced, I’m being inconvenienced a second time? I’m bewildered. The locker room I had to use this morning was absolutely disgusting. The fact that someone made the decision for the men to be inconvenienced yet again is shameful and unfair.
The fact that someone wants me to change and shower in those terrible and disgusting conditions is infuriating. We’re heading into 2020 in an equal society, it’s time for the women to be inconvenienced just like I was for nearly three months. They can head to another location just like I did, and there’s nothing wrong with saying that.
I’m literally furious at this. I don’t desire to go to another location. And the condition of that locker room was outright disgusting. I’m seriously considering cancelling my membership, the price I pay for this unacceptable nonsense is likely going to make me. I’ve now spoken to four different people today about this from NYSC, and I’m now told you're the man to speak to and this was your decision, Franny told me this. Is it time for me to cancel my membership?
Frankly Mike I’d like to speak to you about this and see why I shouldn’t. ....My recent experiences with NYSC have been horrific, and they couldn’t care less. Just to be clear, the men's locker room and the women's locker rooms have been switched while the women's locker room is being renovated.
The men are expected to once again endure a renovation, just after the men's locker room renovation was completed.
