One of the unfortunate "rescues" that is really just an animal hoarder hiding behind nonprofit status.

The owner contacted me about a dog I had applied for via Petfinder, and a stringent application process, weeks later, for a phone interview. The call lasted almost an hour, and I put her on speakerphone so that my associate (who was with me at the time) could hear how deeply concerning the conversation was.

The owner, firstly, bragged about how many applicants she rejected for a single dog. She was incredibly aggressive and openly referred to herself as "a b***h" and proceeded to ask me a lot of questions which were already covered in the application. I politely answered them all. She then proceeded to talk about herself, nothing related to the dog, and how amazing she was for rescuing animals and how much better she was at rescuing animals than all the other rescues.

After 45min of ranting, (on speakerphone, remember,) she asked if I had any quetions for her.

I asked her exactly one question.

She became incredibly defensive and began to argue with me for the better part of 15min until I hung up.

I want to be clear here that I am the ideal applicant for adopting a rescue pet - I have experience, references, and a healthy budget. My qualifications were not the problem.

She then said she had the following: "50, 60, or 80 dogs here right now, and probably 80 cats at least, in four different buildings on my property." - It is a private property she shares with her husband. This is not an official shelter with a staff. It is just two people with over 100 animals, out in the country.

She, hilariously, mentioned that one of her "issues" with previous owners of surrendered animals is that they didn't have time to take care of their pets. She, then, said that *she* doesn't have time for all of the animals in her care, because she has so many - which is just recreating the problem, especially if you have no intention of adopting any of them out.

After a while it became clear that she is an animal hoarder who probably has no idea that she is an animal hoarder, and is doing the bare minimum to maintain a nonprofit status by participating in adoption websites and occasionally calling applicants. Like most animal hoarders, she has a control issue, and truly believes no one can do as good a job as she can - which is why none of them are being adopted out.

I would caution against supporting this "rescue" because I believe it is supporting animal hoarding, abuse of non-profit status, probably tax fraud and evasion as a result, and also just generally an environment I seriously doubt is healthy for any animal. She did mention that she does vet care, which is great, but also not enough. No animal deserves to live in cramped quarters with no idvidual attention, just because some woman has a psychological issue.

Vicki Groves selling puppies with Distemper

To Whom It May Concern:

Hello, I am a avid dog lover I feel the need to address a concern that deeply disturbs me. Dogs are truly man’s best friend and should not be abused or neglected by mankind. It is my duty to report such cruel acts by another and give a voice to animals that cannot defend themselves. Please take the time to read my story so another family does not have to experience what I am going through.

I have always loved dogs. Ever since I was a small child, I have always had a dog and had the pleasure of watching them grow from a small, energetic puppy to a noble, grey senior dog in their golden years. I have a fond memory of how each dog came into my life from Shep, a stray, who followed me home from school to Natasha who bounded to me and licked my face at a breeder’s home. So I have had dogs from every background-from the stray to the breeder pup. However, as of this most recent adoption, I feel as if I have been stuck in a nightmare that I have not woken up from.

A few days ago I started searching the Internet looking for local puppies that need adopted. I was searching for a dog companion to fill my lonely time because my Natasha passed away from cancer November 18. I searched and searched Pet Finder and finally I came across female boxer puppies Kacee and Kadee at My Young and Old Fur Babies Rescue (MYOFBR) in Woodsfield, Ohio. I always wanted a boxer and these pups needed a home, so I knew it was meant to be. I contacted Vicki Groves the owner, who said another family was adopting one of the pups and I could have the other for $550, this price was listed on the website. Vicki told us that the pups had come to her with a bad upper respiratory infection and were skinny. But in the 3 weeks time that she had these 11-week-old boxer pups she claimed they were “gorgeous, stocky, spayed, shots, wormed and microchipped.” So my heartstrings were already wrapped around this pup that needed a home. So my husband and I drove the two and a half hours to Ohio.

When my husband and I got there, Vicki had us wait in a cold shed-not letting us walk anywhere on the premises. We thought this was a little strange but were just so excited to meet our puppy-we just stayed put. Then she brought Kadee in to us, I remembered as I reached out to hold her…I could not believe how cold and skinny she was. Kadee felt like she was kept outside in this 15-degree weather. Then Kadee began to cough, she had nasal discharge coming out of her nose. We asked Vicki if this was okay and she said, “Yeah she’s fine.” I continued to cuddle the puppy while my husband paid her the fee. I could feel the pup’s ribs and asked Vicki if they were giving her can dog food to help the pup put weight on. Vicki replied, “I wouldn’t give a dog can unless they were on death’s door, they just got dry.” I wanted to ask why the pup hadn’t put more weight on in the 3 weeks that Vicki had owned her. As an experienced dog lover I knew this pup was too skinny. You may be asking-“Why I agreed to take this puppy?!” Well, I had experience before with a cat that had an upper respiratory infection and was treated with antibiotics. So I thought I could handle it and just get the pup double-checked by my vet. Before we left, Vicki asked to take our picture for her Facebook page and we agreed. I know we were smiling in that picture but who wouldn’t be when that cute puppy just licked me. In less than 10 hours who knew I would be crying?

That evening we renamed Kadee to Belle. We made her at home, fed her a can that she gobbled down. She gave me a grateful kiss and explored. As the night wore on, the pup seemed to be coughing more. During the night to early morning Belle seemed to be laboring to breathe. I knew this was abnormal and called my vet. They had us bring her down, checked her over and found the pup had pneumonia with a fever of 104F. Belle also had a low glucose caused by lack of nutrition-this pup was sick for a long time. The vet proceeded to tell us that Belle might not make it through the night. I felt the room spinning-less than a month ago I had lost my dog Natasha to cancer in that very office. Why was I going through more heartache?

I notified Vicki that the pup was gravely ill and might die of distemper (highly contagious dog disease). She responded coldly, “Well if you want your money back you will have to drive the dead dog back here for a e-topsy.” I could not believe what I was hearing and that one could be so heartless. I never mentioned anything about money I was calling because I wanted her to notify the other family who adopted Belle’s sister, that they needed to take that pup to the nearest vet. Vicki’s response to this was, “Well I am not sure what you did to your pup but I talked to the other family and their pup is doing well.” We soon found out Vicki was lying as the other family coincidently was at the same vet as us. Vicki would not even answer my calls about the pup’s medical history; the vet needed more information. The next 24 hours we had to take Belle back and forth to the vets. Belle has a highly contagious infection called coccidia, bacterial pneumonia and distemper. Unfortunately, Belle’s sister passed away. Also, the family had another senior dog that was exposed to the distemper. I currently have Belle in my house in a “quarantine” we are not allowed to go anywhere other than the vets.

Vicki Groves is not a “one woman army” saving the lives of “fur babies”. Rather she is a retailer disguised as a rescue making money on sick animals. She takes animals from puppy mills and patches them up just to keep them living till she can get some type of money out of them. She is neglecting these animals and not giving them the medical care they need. There is no reason a pup she had for 3 weeks should still be that skinny.

So you still may be asking, “Do I regret adopting Belle?” No, I do not. I will give a voice to these animals in need. Vicki Groves needs to be stopped from extorting future families and causing chaos and heartache. My message will not be silenced. You need to take her “rescue” off of your page. Please check Monroe County Ohio court public records she has been sued and has a cease and desist order pending. Rhonda Piat Monroe County dog warden (740)213-4138 can answer more questions for you. No family should have to go through this, don't adopt her dogs and support her making a living off of sick dogs.

This rescue sells sick dogs she had boxer puppies for 3 weeks and didn't see they had pneumonia or distemper or coccidia

This rescue had 2sick boxer puppies for 3 weeks pneumonia, distemper and coccidia how could she not hear the puppies coughing? They were under weight as well. After having the pup less then 24 hours I took her to vet and they immediately kept her. They put her on IV antibiotics. This place is not helping animals it states she's self employed and loving it this is only about making money. How can you be a non profit and make this much money?the other pup died of distemper and the vet stated he hasn't been seen distemper for 30 years. She is a retailer not a rescue she makes money off of sick dogs from puppy mills and flips them to unsuspecting people. She's in cahoots with the East Holmes Veternary clinic these people are disgusting

Tried to adopt

I have been teying to adopt an adult cocker spaniel from My Young and Old Fur Babies. I have sent my application, sent all vet records. All I get are automated emails back. I have left voicemail messages, still have not heard back. Maybe she is in trouble after reading these posts. I am so sorry for those poor boxer puppies. She should be in jail. Abuse is now being treated as a felony.

We drove from michigan to meet the rescuer vicki groves at the holmes vetrranarian clinic in east holmes, oh. To adopt a havenese mix puppy.

When we saw the puppy, my mom and i saw that one of her eyes were infected... And to use these drops. Left eye) it was bulgy but she and the vet said to use the drops. Our new puppy sadie) seemed scared to death and stayed on my moms chest/shoulder for the whole 4 hour trip home. The next day i took sadie to our vet, who said the pressures in her eyes were high, and the left eye was very bad.. And she probably was blind. So then we went to an ophthalmologist and was told she was blind in her left eye with very high pressures... Causing a lot of pain and it had to be removed. So.. My whole family... Husband and 2 daughters went back down to the clinic in east holmes, oh since we could get a discount for the expensive surgery... We did not expect any problems since we were not told there were any major problems with our puppy at the time of adoption. We had to pay for the surgery ourselves. We loved sadie and couldn’t let her go back to a person who lied and did not take care of her animals. Sadie is our one eye puppy who is happy to be loved!!! do not adopt from her..
