Mountain Construction Company Reviews

  • Jan 7, 2021

I was referred to Mountain Construction to complete a project on our 2nd home. It was a pretty simple job of enclosing a car port and turning into a 2 car gareage. The entire area was already covered byt a roof extension of the house and all that was needed was a concrete slab and the wall framed in. I had met with a couple of contractors but was limited on time. When I met Troy Morris he seemed youg but likable and we waled through the project together. I was clear that I wanted the project complete. He was to manage the project.

He sent me the initial bid and it had what seemend to be an overly built slab. There was 550 feet of rebar and 12.5 yard of concrete. The garage pour with a 4" slab required only a little over 5 yards of concrete. The amount of rebar at over 1 foot per square foot was 10x what was needed. I pointed this out and referred him to another concrete contractor who would do the job for far less. As the project manager I expected him to meet witht the concrete contractor to layout the slab so that the framing and all were properly coordinated. Troy confirmed they talked so it seemed he was doing his job.

The cocrete was poured just in time to beat the winter freeze and the framing soom commenced there after. troy complained that the concrete contractor didn't do the pour right. Since the slab was done and it seemed he had a solution I let it go.

The carport is supported by 6 concrete and wooden posts. The concrete post is covered in decorative rock and comes up about 30 inches above grade. Troy initially said he would have to cut the rock to accomodate the framing. After the job started he suggested other ways to handle framing around the posts. I told him this is an $800,000 property and the work you do needs to reflect a high level of finish. Not being a contractor and having him as a PM I expected him to carry out the job. Photos attached of the result.

The project included a man door. We got one but it had no door knob or lock set and the hinges were bright brass, not the color of any of our hardware. Now we have a door swinging in the wind. A small detail but one someone will have to fix and something you expect a professional to be mindful of.

The garage slab abutted a covered patio that was covered with paving stones as the surface. I pointed this out to both the concrete contractor and Troy, questioning how they would handle the step down from the patio to the slab as it transitioned through the door. Troy assurred me they could handle it. Once the framing was done the wall was on the concrete footing for the pation and there was a pile of pavers along with a large gap between the wall and the paver patio. I told Trroy this had to be completed as a par tof the project. Again something he was aware of from day one. This was resolved and that part of the project complete.

My wife and I came over to the property, called Troy and let him know we were in. I asked if he could bring over an additional 10 siding boards as the remaining in the garage had been damaged by the cleaning staff. He came over, presented us with the receipt showing he bought the 10 boards, and the total for the project. We paid up the entire amount on the spot. Troy did not give us a receipt and said he would send one. About a week later he sent an email with an attachment. I assumed it was the receipt and went on with my business.

2 weeks later I called to ask when he was going to deliver the wood we paid him for and he informed me we have an outstanding balance and would take us to collections if not paid by Jan 22nd. Since we paid up in full for the project plus the additional $500+ for the wood refused.

Since then Troy has been threatening, intimidating and had a lawyer contact us about this matter. This is not someone you can trust. In the project he accepted and charged for project managmet and then claimed to ponly be the framer. He down graded the quality fo the work when it became more convenient to a lower quality of work. He came to our house, presented the final bill, which we paid, and then hurried out without having or leaving a receipt. Then, emails a demand for more money without having any basis on a receipt dated after he cashed the check for the full amount.
