Im a contractor who did $5,000.00 worth of remodeling and only recieved $150. Tom contacted me and said he needed a maintenance guy for 200 properties in Madison county. He wined and dined me at Montana Mikes, with promises of $25/hr. I sign up do a w9, first project was small 8 hrs, getting a home tenant ready.

During the walk through, he asks if i can do drywall, (im a contractor and own fraziers Maintenance and repair) i say yes. He asks for an on onsite bid that day. I count 48 sheets of drywall. Gave a bid of $1000 to hang n finish. During the walkthrough he shows me its paneling, says just pop it off n hang it. Shows me behind 1 panel, that had no drywall.

Behind the rest of the panelling, there was 2 layers of black molded plaster that had to be removed, and dumped, which i didnt notice, until I was hanging sheets (He had pulled 1 panel of that didnt have drywall, so it seemed simple.) He stated he would purchase and provide all material. So fast forward 1 week, im hanging it, and realize theres only 4 studs per wall, box framed 2x3 for the panels.

So before i could hang it the entire house needed framed in with studs. He agreed to add on $350. Im almost done with the drywall, he asks if i do vinyl floor, he adds 2 rooms of lanoleum $400. He adds fixing a rubber roof $300, all new window trim, casing, and baseboards $350, then he brings 10 gals of killz oil base to "seal the drywall".

Now you dont use killz, thats stain covering, and basically painting the entire house, and very messy and costly, adds $350. (Knowing what i know now, i wouldve charged $2,000 just to paint with killz!) Now this was my 1st year of business, and during this project I was also remodeling an 8 unit complex, so I hired help.

Due to the 2 layers of black mold infested plaster removal (3 days labor with 4 guys) we realize every outlet has to be spaced out an inch due to the old 2x3 studs, $75. I get this all done, painted, trimmed out, rubber roof, 2 vinyl floors, etc. He does the walk through and complains that 1 window had the drywall an inch short, due to another employees work, this is an easy fix i offered to fix. (The window trim covered it, so it didnt even matter!)

Due to this sole reason, he says im fired and he refused to pay a fine. Said "Sue me, I'll just have my other guys will fix it, I'll back charge you for all this materials, and you'll end up owing me." I refuse to leave till I'm paid, he calls the cops and they both stand by and watch me load 2 truck loads of tools, so much stuff it was 5 ft above my bed! He never fixed it.

Moved my friend in 2 weeks later. I walk in the house, nothing was fixed or changed. I was broke, and couldn't afford to file small claims. I paid out $950 in labor, and never got reimbursed for all the materials that I had to purchase myself.

Come to find out, he does this to inexperienced contractors. He also rents houses out just so he can kick them out when they're 1 week late. He makes more money in evictions and default judgements than he does in rent!
