I have been a loyal customer of this company for over 30 years and am a senior citizen with health and financial issues on a fixed income. I had a past due bill of $258.71 for propane delivery. Modern Gas, which in the past had never made additional delivery until the balance was paid, made a delivery to my home on 9/26/16, without my request or consent, essentially doubling my bill to $517.66. A week later on 10-5-16, with no pre-notification of disruption of services, they put a lock out cap on the tank leaving me without heat, hot water and stove. I was forced to pay the full amount before they would unlock the tank on 10/6/16. I was told it was my fault and while the additional delivery was an accident by them, unfortunately I would have to pay. I told Lindsay, their representative, that I would no longer be using their company and to please not make any further deliveries. Within minutes of their service crew unlocking the tank, which took an additional 2 phone calls to accomplish, there was a delivery truck at my home preparing to make another delivery, again without my request or consent. Had I not been home and turned him away, they would have made another delivery which I would have been financially responsible to pay. I believe this a scam on their part and another example of price gouging, which they have perpetrated in the past, making unwanted deliveries when the price was at the highest, or before prices were due to fall. Their prices have consistently been significantly higher than competitors. They advertise 24 hour emergency service, but 2 years ago, during one of the coldest winters on record, they refused to make a delivery to me when my tank ran out at night, because I had a balance due. I had to spend the night in sub freezing weather without heat, hot water or stove.
After reviewing numerous complaints online of similar behavior to other customers throughout their service areas, I believe these practices are deliberate and show a pattern of price gouging, retribution, and intimidation of customers already suffering hardship, which needs to be addressed by the Attorney General's Office.
I will be choosing another company to supply my propane needs.
I would like Modern Gas to remove their tank and quickly re-imburse me for whatever amount is left in the tank. They have a reputation for not removing their tanks or making repayment in a timely fashion, often sticking the customer and forcing the threat of civil action. I will be forced to come up with funds, and endure additional financial hardship to make the change. I believe this is also part of their practice of retribution and intimidation, to discourage customers from leaving. I am hoping the AG of Pa will look into this and take action to prevent this company from it's predatory practices.
