Warning: This article contains descriptions of animal cruelty. A video of the incident is included that contains disturbing imagery.

A Quebec man Michael Montiggny from Sept-Isles, Quebec, Canada, posted a video on social media in which he appears to purposefully hit a baby moose to death in the Moisie area.

On August 3, 2022, a demonic being deliberately chased and ran over two baby moose with his truck... Making absolutely grotesque, deplorable, vulgar and disgusting and even racist remarks towards Indigenous nations while torturing the two babies! Showing no pity and remorse, even proud and amused by his absolutely UNACCEPTABLE and barbaric gesture.

The video shows the driver hitting the young moose as it tried to flee, then running over the animal in the opposite direction as the moose lay motionless on the side of the road. The animal was lying on the ground after Michael Montigny drove his pickup truck forwards and backwards on top of it. His vehicule is shown swerving to the side of the road to run over the moose.

The video was intially posted to Snapchat, a platform where videos have a 24-hour lifespan, but was captured and then re-shared on Facebook, prompting outrage from commenters. Michael Montigny who posted the video appears to use the name Montignyyo on social networks.

Animal rights groups outraged are calling for action after this man from Sept-Îles. Speaking to CTV News on Friday, they expressed hope that justice will be served for the young moose. They hope that societal values regarding wildlife protection will be fully reflected in federal and provincial laws, adding that the Criminal Code should be enforced to its fullest extent.

Police have already met and questioned the man in the video. He was known by Police ” said Nancy Fournier, spokeswoman for the SQ.The SQ has already compiled a file and sent it to the prosecutor, because cruelty to animals is treated as a criminal act, she added.

According to Criminal Code of Canada anyone who “causes unnecessary suffering” to an animal can be jailed for up to five years or receive a hefty fine of up to $10,000, depending on the offense.
