I’ve been having trouble with both the lousy ‘old’ and the recent ‘new and improved (?)’ self-checkout systems for about 4 years now. The old – constantly red and green lights stopping and then clearing the way to continue, the lights sometimes flash red then green so often they should use them for blinking Christmas lights. Lots of ‘wait for attendant’ notices (key word here is WAIT), machine stopping your order with a red light somehow thinking it’s a separate order (not exactly Artificial Intelligence), see the line you’re in get the dreaded red light and jump to another? That lane often will get the red light too. Other glitches also.

On to the ‘new and improved’ system. The machines will often spit back or reject perfectly new and fine bills from the on-site ATM or my bank. Over and over. Often the few and sometimes overwhelmed human attendants can’t get to you, will walk right by you and say “I’ll be back to help you in a minute” and then disappear to the back of the store to put items back. Other attendants will come over and ‘push the wrong button’ to solve your problem and cause more delays. I’m missed a dozen or so buses at least by just a minute or half a minute over the last 4 years. I end up spending 1-1/2 hours for 30 minutes of shopping and 10-20 minutes of of checking out. “Try allowing for more time” you say? I allowed an extra 10 minutes last night and STILL missed another bus. Again.

I complain half the time, but get lame apologies, lip-service about speaking to the employees and improving things, etc. but the same problems keep happening, even with their shiny new and improved system. They can't or won't fix things. Or maybe don’t really care. I know a couple of people who also don’t like the Meier’s checkout experience. Even some of their employees don’t like it! I’ve cut back my Ft. Gratiot Meijer’s shopping by 2/3’s. Maybe I need to skip them even more. Occasionally their machines short you when you insert coin in to cover the 'coin' amount.

On Friday, March 27th I ordered groceries from Meijer.com to be delivered to my house. When ordering, I also checked the box NO SUBSTITUTIONS. They not only ignored my wishes, but they also charged me FOUR TIMES the cost of the items I ordered. I noticed this right away before the order even left the store and canceled the entire order.

This was their store at 2020 North Grape Road in Mishawaka, IN I talked with the store manager "Josh" and he told me I had 3 choices, #1 take the order as is, #2 get store credit and do my own shopping, #3 I am out of luck. YES, he said those EXACT WORDS. I have been calling and emailing Meijer's corporate offices about this since the minute it happened. THREE DAYS after it happened they opened a "case" that case is still to this minute untouched.

I have begged for a callback and they just ignore me. FOUR of their customer service reps HUNG UP on me! At this time of the pandemic, it is very important I get my money back because it was all I had for groceries. I have $1 in my bank account and they have $100 of my money! This transaction should have been immediately voided when I refused and canceled the order, it was not. This company is either run by thieves or idiots.

I have filed a fraud report with my bank as well. They have also tried to resolve this with Meijer and they are not responding to them either. What kills me is here I sit with no groceries and no money and they don't even have the courtesy to call me or even email me back. BOYCOTT MEIJER AT ALL COSTS

I feel harassed by the employees at the 28th street and Kalamazoo Meijer whenever I choose self checkout. I feel they're constantly watching me, interrupting me, and accusing me of shoplifting when I go through self checkout, and I feel a large part of it is because I'm a person of color. I have spoken to the general manger about this on several occasions, but he always backs up his employees, stating that they're just doing their job to make sure no one leaves with no unpaid merchandise, but I never notice the employees treating their white customers with the constant vigilance they treat customers of color.
