I just had two young gals come to my door. I am only home because I am waiting to hear on a couple of jobs and working on graduate classes on-line while living on financial aid....The two gals said they were selling magazine subscriptions to help fund a softball trip and purchase new uniforms. They were both very polite and said their parents kept telling them to tell me this and that. I asked what the subscriptions cost, and they said $17, so I thought ok, since my daughter used to play softball, I'd help them out. I guess I knew something was a bit strange when each girl needed a separate check, then each ended up being $53! They explained what the cost meant, and somehow I still went for it. I did immediately look up the company on-line to discover these two gals were part of a scam. All the stories I read were similar to mine.... Raising money for a trip, parents communicating certain information, even the offers to come back and do chores (which luckily I passed on!) I did have the chance to put stops on both checks, which will probably still cost me something, but I figure it is cheaper than the two checks clearing at any rate! I did not want the subscriptions for myself (I barely have time to do anything except my coursework) but there was the option to give it to a soldier overseas, which apparently is also a standard part of the scam. I would have never known the difference once the checks cleared, so I saved myself a little something, but I would beware if you get someone at your door selling magazines in the future! :(
