I applied to become an intern for MarketStorm Global on LinkedIn. I received a call within two days, but was unable to pick up the phone since I was in a meeting. I later call back, but there was no response. In fact, they never pick up the phone. They called me once more the following day, and I answered the call. The receptionist, Natasha, wanted me to go in for an interview the same day in the next two hours. I showed up to their location in Downtown, Miami. As I entered their office on the 9th floor, I see people playing billiards and blasting music, which was odd for a formal business interview. After 20 minutes, I was called in for an interview with Will Ackerson. I asked questions about the tasks interns were expected to complete, and he vaguely answered with “marketing for companies”. Any time I asked a question, they seemed to be taken aback. Ackerson mentioned that only 6 of the 200 people applying would be called back for a lengthier interview the following day.
Later that day, I was called and told I had been chosen to attend the Saturday interview.
When I showed up for my “interview with the CEO, Gavin Walsh”, I was given a document stating my participation in a one day observation, however there were no specifications as to the location. After I waited an hour to be attended, Mr. Will Ackerson leads me into his office with 6 other applicants and pairs us with a “corporate trainer”. My “trainer”, Kendra Witter, took me downstairs and outside of the business facility into the streets of Downtown, claiming she was going to take me to her office to observe her business and “have fun”. She took me into her car, and drove me all the way to a Best Buy in Aventura. Along the way to Aventura, she asked me to shut off my phone since we were in an “interview”. I asked her where we were going and how exactly individuals make money in the business. Witter’s expression changed instantly and she stated “since I am the interviewer, I’ll be asking the questions today”. She later asked me to start listing 30 strengths and 30 weaknesses and elaborate on them and said “let’s listen to some music now”, presumably so that I would stop asking questions and to disorient me.
Once we arrived at the Best Buy, Kendra took me to a room at the back of the store and told me to continue writing my strengths and weaknesses. She said she would be back in an hour and 15 minutes and left me alone. At this time, I was finally able to take out my phone and contact my father about the scam. I observed Kendra from a distance and she was involved with Xfinity, presumably selling their products at Best Buy. At this time, I fled from the scene. Aventura Police arrived at the scene and issued a reference number for this case. MarketStorm Global is a company that receives hundreds of applicants, daily. They make it seem as though it is competitive, when in reality, they “hire” all applicants. The interview I was supposed to attend is a tactic the company uses to receive free labor. Prior to being called in on the same day, I spoke to some of the applicants and they all agreed that the business seemed extremely shady. There was one 24 year old girl with a 4 year old son at home, who commuted from Homestead, under the impression that she had landed in a legitimate job. I never saw her again due to the fact that we were all separated, but I know that she too must be just as disappointed and upset with this company’s compulsive lies. Another applicant told me that her friend was a 3rd generation Cuban and she was denied the job for that very reason.
This company seems to be looking for young individuals from Hispanic descent, assuming that they are more easily persuaded into falling in their scheme. Upon further investigation, many more people have complained about MarketStorm Global. On social media, the company does free giveaways for people who write good reviews about the company. Their deceptive business should be exposed to prevent others from falling into this trap.
