On 8/5/15 when I phoned Marion Phelps after an extensive search to locate a career resume specialist/counselor to schedule a career coaching session with her, I let her know my main interest was having an updated resume prepared along with some career coaching. I also expressed my desire to have some references, to which she seemed reluctant to provide but later called with the name of "Lisa" and a phone number. I did call this number later and received back a glowing message regarding Marion's services. During the initial phone call, I inquired about Marion's fees for these services and she informed me that she charged $45 per hour. The first meeting was held on 8/7/15 at her home, in her living room, where I handed to her a few resumes I had created over the years but were out of date, a letter of recommendation I had received from a prior place of employment, and then she proceeded to ask me questions. I became concerned when she asked me to take her on a journey through my life, during which a man walked into the living room and I expressed concern as I thought we were in a private setting and I was discussing very private matters. She responded to my concern with this statement: "Oh, he's just my partner and can't hear a thing." Later he came back in and they went into the kitchen and began discussing a trip he was to make to the hardware store and he asked her for money several times. It was very awkward, and now I realize I should have gotten up and left right then and there, but I did not. Being brand new to Santa Fe, going through a divorce, I was not in a very clear state of mind and feeling quite vulnerable. All of this went on during the time I was being charged. Finally, the session ended two hours later, and I asked her what I would owe her. I assumed it would be $90 for the two-hour session and she said that was correct but that she wanted $150 toward the preparation of the resume. I made out a check for $240, rescheduled a meeting for the following Friday, 8/14/15 @ 2 p.m. She asked me to complete a list of "accomplishments" and get it to her ASAP and she said she would have a draft resume for me that we would review at the next meeting. By Monday afternoon, 8/10/15 I had completed an extensive list and e-mailed it to her. This is an exact copy of her e-mail response to me: "Dear Joanne, you have done a fabulous job with your accomplishments. Thanks for making the effort. Look forward to seeing you on Friday. All the best, marion phelps." When I met with her on 8/14/15, she directed me to her dining room table. Before she handed me the draft resume, she began a discussion about my career direction, which went on at length as I presented many scenarios to her of how future careers could unfold for me and the possibilities therein. Finally, about an hour later, we took a break as she went looking for some forms to give me a personality test entitled: "Six personality types." I asked to see the resume a couple of times as I was anxious to see what she had designed for me. After giving me the personality test, I was allowed to review the draft resume and mark it up as I saw fit while she went about some other activity. It became apparent on review of the resume that she had mostly cut and pasted from the "accomplishments" document I had sent her and from prior resumes. There was no original writing contained in the draft resume AT ALL. I was very disappointed in what I received but kept that to myself. Two hours later she sent me on my way with a Myers-Briggs test I was to complete at home and return to her in two weeks, when we scheduled to meet again and charged me $100 for the meeting and I wrote her a check for such amount. On 8/16 I sent her an e-mail telling her I wanted to write my own resume and that I did not want to complete the Myers-Briggs testing. Her return e-mail stated: "Wow, what a wonderful idea. I think it would be terrific if you write your own resume. Please complete the things I gave you and return them to me as soon as possible. Cheers and what a good idea. Won't be able to talk tomorrow until late in the afternoon. All the best & let me hear from you soon." no signature. My returned e-mail on the same dated expressed: "Marion, I'm not interested in taking the Myers-Briggs test, but I'll happily return it to you.The reality is I cannot afford to spend any more money on this endeavor. Please don't spend any further time on my resume, as I will pick it up where you left off on Friday. I would like to receive a copy of what I was marking up on Friday. Thanks!" We then sent some e-mails back and forth to set up a time to meet, which was set for Friday, 8/21/15 at 9 a.m. When I arrived at her door on Friday at 9 a.m., she let me in and directed me to the living room but left the door unlocked this time, as on both prior occasions she had locked the door behind us as she let me in. I handed her the manila envelop containing the Myers-Briggs testing data. She proceeded to open a folder and take out the draft resume and put cross-marks across the pages and mark "draft for revision" on the top of the first page and then handed it to me along with several other documents I had left with her on the first meeting. I then expressed to her that I felt there should be a refund coming to me from the $150 deposit I had given to her on 8/7/15 as I could not believe that it took her three hours to cut and past the information from my "accomplishments" document and copy from the prior resumes to make this document. She then put her head down, picked it up, looked me in the eyes and said, "Well, Joanne, it's all about your lack of clarity." At this point I stood up and said, "I'm done with you." And I walked out of her home allowing the screen door to slam behind me.
