In 1966, I was the Orange County, California March of Dimes Poster Child. In 1964, was born premature, with heart issues and without my left arm below the elbow. Against my wishes, my parents agreed to promote the organizations cause. It may sound far fetched, considering my age, however I remember being very unhappy at times and asking my mother to make it stop.
Regardless, the dog and pony show went on. I didnt like the spotlight, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, The Smothers Brother's Show and many other appearances wore thin on me. When I complained, my mother assured me I was being paid $20 per hour. Money meant to fund my eventual college education.
When I reached university age, the money never materialized. When I asked my parents they denied receiving anything for my time. I never believed them and paid for my own schooling. My parents promised inheritance never came, so I reached out to the March of Dimes, simply. I've been asking them for the simple truth.
Plain honesty as to the agreement made. With their cooperation I could understand much. Most of it personal. Some of it litigious. The fact of the matter is simple in itself.
