Pardon me writing it here, but rather I was not aware where else could I jot down the experience that I have. I was approached by Vijay Ramanan from Lister for a enhancement on our current business software. Even though our current software is working well for us, since Vijay Ramanan was convincing enough, I sat down to listen to him. Neither was I aware what I was getting into, nor was I looking at the credentials of either him or the company (Lister Technologies). The company from other references (after this consulting experience) I heard that is a horrible to vendor to work with. Lister also seems like doesn't have good associates with them that could help them complete projects. I have also heard that they are known to not complete the projects that they have taken up and involuntarily most of their software projects have been a failure.
Apart from writing about the company, the person mentioned herewith (Vijay) is the crux of why I am writing about this experience. Vijay Ramanan makes a lot of jargonized sentences and emails to get you convinced to listen to him. Otherwise, if you listen intently his sentences will not make sense at all from his consultant parlance. My team, being naive, started the process of the finalizing the requirements and allocating the required budget etc. I was a little vary from the beginning but I was sure that we could pull out from the engagement if the need be. This assumption was wrong. He flew from Chennai and met along with his other few executives (president etc) and then convinced us enough to sign off on the project. When the initial sign off was happening, I had a word with a few of his previous engagements who are situation in US and wanted to check back on the his worthiness.
That's when it started backfiring on me, and those people were a little hesitant to talk to me about him. Not sure why. Also, from a few people I heard that his projects never get completed and this professional friend of mine warned to stop the engagement and go for someother vendor. Then I started my due diligence and found that his solution and its subsequent effort estimates were way inflated. I had to sit down with another vendor and compare notes and get their estimates and was able to understand that this was his strategy to sell services and extort customers hard earned money. I also found that I could get the solution done using 1/3 of the cost involved. My advice: Please be vary of his consulting parlance and do not agree to all his views and alternative approaches. There are more hidden charges than you can think. Cross check with other vendors and then take a decision that will help you and your organization.
