From September 2015 to November 2015 I wrote news and editorial pieces for LiberalAmerica.org, owned by Tiffany Willis ([email protected]). During this time, I composed 39 articles, being that I was expected to write three or four pieces a week at the minimum to stay on board.
Unfortunately, owing to a breakdown in communication over me being promoted to an editorial position but not being properly briefed regarding my responsiblilities, I was let go on November 20, 2015. Shortly afterward, my work was removed from the site. I tried to collect what I was owed, but being that my work was removed from the site, Ms. Willis' business partner, Sam Sanner ([email protected]), basically told me that neither she nor LiberalAmerica.org owed me anything.
Unfortunately, this is a common practice among so-called “liberal” news and opinion blog websites. The money is derived from advertising revenue. The owner usually takes most of the money and divides the rest among the staff. However, most of the time, the revenue is small, so writers often end up making less than the minimum wage. Moreover, the pay scale is entirely speculative, which is no good because in addition to creating situations where a person can put in a lot of time writing for a website and not be paid a cent (as was the case with me and LiberalAmerica.org) it causes unnecessary competition within a website's staff that easily escalates to infighting and also is deleterious to the quality of the website's content, being that the writers end up caring less about the quality of their work and more about getting page views.
Ironically, LiberalAmerica, has published numerous articles clamoring for the federal minimum wage to be raised. HA!
