I signed with Legacy publishing through an agent named Beverly Burgess. She recommended that I do an update of my book instead of myself self publishing that I had out. I was in the midst of moving from Florida to Washington state, and Beverly suggested that I speak with Gabe Vaughn. I met with Gabe and brought my book to him. I told him about the history of what I have gone through to publish my book while living on a fixed income as a single mother. We even discussed what things have and have not been done to the book, as well as my disappointment with the person (a friend) I paid for editing, and so on. He told me you get what you pay for. We agreed on half upfront as deposit and the final payment due when the book is ready for publishing, as it states in my contract. I asked could I make payments in the meantime so I don't have to try and come up with it all at once. The contract was signed January 18th, I finish paying him the beginning of May. According to the contract he had 120 days to finish the book, editing, cover, etc. However he had not done anything so far in the process. I kept in continual contact throughout the whole 120 days (he never called me except a return call in February 2016) about the books progress. There was always issues that he had going on within his company that he had not had a chance to do anything on the book and promised to get on it, I was the fourth book in line. I certified receipt him a letter that I would like a refund because the 120 days was up as per the contract which said once I notified him that he had 90 days to produce something. His only response claim is that if I didn't pay everything up front he can produce whatever he wants indefinitely. In other words I paid him $2,200 and I might not ever get anything from him. He keeps trying to misconstrue the meaning of the contract lines in 6 and 10 which state that I pay half up front and the final 7 days after the book is ready to publish. Line 6 states he has 120 days to complete the project and 90 days after to produce something if he has not in the 120 days. After I notified him of this, and that he was now in his 90 day window, he finally sent me editing to be approved and a book cover to be approved. I stated that I am a biracial woman so why is the woman on the cover white. Other than that I did like the cover. He did not send a response, only a book synopsis and suggestion on how to write my bio. Since then has not responded to me or kept in contact and I have continue to try and stay in touch with him. Now the 90 days are up and I still have no book and no response, as well as I'm out of $2,200.
