On the adveice of a friend I decided to retain Kathlen after meeting with her at her office in Irvine.
I Suffered years of abuse at the hands of my husband who is also an attorney and has many rich and powerful friends in Orange County. MY marriage was great at first but after a couple of years he changed and became verbally abusive which culminated in the last years with physical abuse where I feared for my life and safety. My Husabnd was a very controlling individual who kept control of of the finances, and limited my access to money. I managed to accumulate a small amount of money in comparison to husbands largess, unfortunately having to pawn jewlery and then blame household help when he inquired to the whereabouts of the jewelry he had given me. this led to further supicion and deprivations endured as I had no money and no family to turn to for help. furthermore, after a visit to my doctor i found out that I am diagnosed with breast cancer.
Kathlleen assured me after taking a retainer from me that she would be there to represent me no matter how long the divorce would take. I suggested a restraining order against my husband, as well as a psychological profile which I would be willing to take as well. she agreed with me that these were both excellent ideas and compliemented on my knowledge of law. I asked he how long it would be to get a restraining order, and she said she would help me right away. I inquired as to to length and time of the divorce proceedings and she assured me that california being a no fault state that I was entitled to fifty percent of the accmulated assets during the course of my marriage. Satisfied that she would provide me effective council we discussed retainer costs came to agreement whereupon I paid to her by check in a newly created checking account for this sole purpose. I remember leaving her office with the first hope that I would have the opportunity to live my life in freedom and happiness. The problems really started when she just kept demanding more money. When I told her I was broke she became very angry and hung up on me. It was at this point she refused to return my calls.
I have been forced to go to legal aid where I am now filing motions on my own, as well as asking the court for waivers in fees due to my lack of income. I'm hoping for the best and have asked for some pro bono help as suggested to me by legal aid. I can honesly say that after my experience with Kathleen, this is the reason ethics is always part of the BAR examination.
