As a homeowner, retired military, I am filing this report to warn others, especially the military community in the Dayton area and surrounding cities to BEWARE OF Kittyhawk Realty and Doug Harshman (owner). Doug Harshman has managed my property in Huber Heights, OH for over 6 years now and I have never had an issue with them screwing me over, until now.
It may be due to the fact that when I was relocated to another base and now retired from the military residing in California. Miles away from Ohio to where it would make it hard for me to deal with him in person. Then again, there has been times that I have questioned Doug’s integrity.
On 9/27/2018 one of their rental representatives, Jackie Harshman contacted me via email and stated, "I wanted to let you know that when we did our inspection at the home last week I noticed that the hall kitchen sink faucet was leaking. Upon our plumber’s inspection, they found the pipe to be leaking in the wall". Note that Jackie stated “Upon”. Instead of contacting me the day of the inspection and notifying me of the "leaking pipe" issue, Kittyhawk Realty chose to proceed with the repairs contracting out their own plumbers.
Remind you, through emails and documents, the repaired happened a week prior to the 9/27/2018 email was sent to me. That is unacceptable and bad business!!! Not to mention, a $450 leaky pipe repair that was not justified as an "emergency". It was never stated via email/phone that my house was flooding.
To add to my frustration after hearing this, Jackie Harshman states in her email, "you can discuss with First American Home Warranty about maybe getting reimbursement for what was performed". Obviously she is not very smart, otherwise she would know that there is no reimbursement when other contractors (other than ones affiliated with First American Home Warranty) are used to perform repairs. Instead of admitting Kittyhawk Realty was at fault and correcting their mistake, they chose to pass the buck!
Finally, on 10/4/2018, I was able to speak with Doug Harshman via phone and he stated, “in our system it shows your home warranty expired on 9/17/2018. It is not the maintenance section's responsibility to contact First American Home Warranty to verify your contract has been renewed”. Then how else does Doug or his people at Kittyhawk realty know when my home warranty renews?!!! This was very amusing to hear because I "never" once had to contact Doug Harshman or Julie Harshman within the last 6 years to notify them that my home warranty contract was renewed.
So unless my home warranty contract expiration date magically updates itself in their system every year, someone at Kittyhawk Realty has been updating my information every year. Otherwise, the date in Kittyhawk Realty's system would be a few years old and not showing 9/17/2018.
Yet, Julie Harshman and Doug Harshman choose to back pedal making up ridiculous excuses for screwing me on repairs costing $450. I do want to mention that when I spoke with Doug Harshman on the phone 10/4/2018, he tried to deter me from contacting First American Home Warranty and that he would look into it…because “sometimes there is fine print”. Doug also suggested I may want to try suing First American Home Warranty for reimbursement of the $450. When Doug mentioned that to me, I was flabbergasted.
I served in the United States Air Force for 21yrs dealing with many people and I am not one to be played for a fool. I know when someone is lacking integrity. First American Home Warranty is not to blame for his screw up, Doug Harshman and his company is at fault. Of course, neither he nor anyone at Kittyhawk Realty will take the blame.
It's ridiculous that I already paid over $700 to renew my home warranty for the year and on top of that Doug is charging me $450 in repairs, which according to First American Home Warranty "are covered under my contract". I will be blunt, it pisses me off! On 10/5/2018, I contacted First American Home Warranty and we went over the invoice that I received from Kittyhawk Realty for the repairs performed. First American Home Warranty insisted that they would have covered "all of the repairs listed on the invoice and should have been contacted".
Unfortunately I am unable to terminate my contract with Kittyhawk Realty until May 2019 and at that time will be contacting a reputable realtor to sell my house. I hope that this will warn others steer clear of the name “Kittyhawk Realty” when looking for a property manager and/or rental. Please do your research as there are multiple complaints filed on Kittyhawk Realty/Doug Harshman on this website, including the Better Business Bureau of Dayton, OH.
