I took my Harley to a motorcycle shop off 441 and Stirling to put on a new rear tire. A friend sent me there and generously paid for the tire in advance. I had to pay the shop owner an extra $40 for the whitewall ( over $200 for a motorcycle tire) . I had been driving on the 'old' tire for about a year, I ride every day and everywhere, and it was time for a new one.
Something had been rubbing the tire in one spot a little, so it was a bit shiny there, not 'bad',( rode like that for many months without raising 'red flags' or diminishing performance) and the shop owner said he'd check and fix it while the tire is off, anyway . A few hours after drop-off I picked up the bike with the new tire. The whitewall was still blue and full of greasy finger and hand marks; they never washed it off (usually, tires are put on and the blue is courteously and respectfully washed off to show the clean, bright white wall), it looked gross and disgusting, but I needed to go home, less than 2 miles, it was Friday late afternoon , then.
I rode it home. When I took it out later to wash it and ride it, I noticed that the right side of the tire looked different- oddly, only about an inch of it was bright white, there were gross and scary deep and heavy gouges in the brand-new tire, so deep that I couldn't risk using the bike without getting a flat, breaking down, wrecking, blowing up, tearing up the tire completely and risking my life.
I took pictures of it and sent it to the owner of the shop, showing and telling him that the tire is torn up, severely damaged. The owner of the shop reacted not with concern but, aggression, ridicule, disdain, and disrespect, he refuses to take responsibility, said 'this was before' and became disrespectful and a bit belligerent and rude. First, he said 'this was before' (nonsense, I rode the bike for many months with the previous tire and no gouges), then he said he never had business with me, then he said he didn't know what I was talking about and I need to 'stop harassing' him.
It seems clear that he will not take responsibility and replace the tire. I drove less than 2 miles with the new tire (home from the shop). I investigated further through a different shop (towed it there!) and found that the chainguard had been out of place and nothing was checked for correct placement, fit and accuracy when the tire was put on and, thus, had torn up the tire.
I find that repair shop owners, whether for cars of motorcycles, seem to have a tendency to treat female customers and their vehicles with disdain, neglect, disregard and disrespect and just flat out refuse to provide professional service, make good on damage their neglective actions cause. Why do they do it to women? My guess is , they think there won't be a painful consequence ( I had a situation with a car repair shop not too long ago, that was unbelievable- my car is still sitting in the garage, torn up, blown up motor, fried electric system and inoperable, even though I PAID that shop over 5grand ... lack of fear of consequence seems to be the only plausible 'explanation).
