A little over 2 years ago, we purchased a Doberman puppy from Doug and Jacque Matson of KANSA Dobermans, kansadobe . com. He is out of one of their Index vom Hellerwald litters. We loaded up our kids and drove from Iowa to Kansas to pick up this puppy. Not sure how much we paid exactly, I've done my best to forget how badly they ripped us off. I know it was more than $2,500. We met their dogs the night we got there and paid them for the male puppy. We arrived the next morning to pick him up. We were invited into the most filthy house we have ever been in, the stench as the front door opened was very overpowering. Dog poop and pee everywhere and their dogs had clearly been allowed to chew on everything in the house, they even chewed holes in the floor. All of this makes for filthy pups that turn into filthy dogs, which is exactly what this dog is. A huge make-shift baby gate kennel in the middle of their house filled with shreaded newspaper feces and urine. They obviously had no interest in creating clean puppies.
Against our instincts we took the puppy with us. We knew about puppy mills and have even been to them before without buying. Maybe we felt stuck or something else but we should have demanded our money back and gone home without him. We took him with us and he was very timid on the way home, we thought he would come out of it once we had him for a few days, boy were we wrong. We have had him for over 2 years and he is as timid as day one. The most neurotic dog that we have ever owned. He never stops moving, he paces and circles like he is tweeking on some kind of drugs.
Our vet said that he was very poorly bred. I contacted Jacque Matson within the first 6 months and I told her of our problems with him. She was unmoved and offered to do nothing but take him back but would not return any of our money. When I say that this dog is neurotic, I mean it in every sense of the word, this dog is seriously not right. And they didn't care at all. They produce absolutely inferior dogs for profit. They have no concern for the breed and do nothing to better the Doberman. They are a straight up puppy mill but they do it inside their house and it shows. Our dog is far from show quality even though that's what we paid for. Even if he was conformationally correct, which he is not, his temperament is completely lacking. We have two other dogs in the house that thrive and don't cower when you reach out to pet them, which he has done since the day we picked him up from the hell from which he came. Every day with this dog is less enjoyable than the last. Some have spoken about bad hearts comming from KANSA, we haven't experienced that yet. I hate to say it but if he dropped dead from a heart attack tomorrow, I'm sure he would be happier than being the dog that they created. I doub't very seriously that he was bred to Index vom Hellerwald and I should report them to the AKC and demand a DNA test to prove lineage. Which now that I think about it, I will do exactly that.
