Im an independent film producer who was looking for a post production sound editor to design a professional sound scape for my feature film. I was contacted by Justin through my Craigslist ad. His credits were appealing and his reel looked good but it seems as though he worked as an assistant on these bigger films, and didn't actually do the work advertised in his reel and imdb credits.
He told me not to worry and promised professional results for an unbeatable price. I should have known the price was far too low to be a professional job. He said he could do the entire post production audio job for $1,000. I paid him half the money up front, $500 and he started work.
3 or so days later he comes back with the first reel finished and sends it over for my review. I listened to it excited to see the progress, however was shocked at how bad of a job he'd done. the sound was actually 10 times worse than it was when I sent it to him. I don't know what he could have done to mess up the sound so bad, or how he could listen to what he sent me and think it waold ever be able to show on TV or DVD or theaters, or even on YouTube. He added some filter that muffled al the voices so you couldn't understand what the characters were saying and sound effects that were completely out of place. I had my composer listen to it as we'll and said it was the worst sound design job he's ever heard. It seemed as though he was playing around with the program testing things out like he had never done this before like a young child.
i told Justin how extremely dissatisfied I was with the quality of the sound work and asked for a refund, or at least a partial refund. He got all upset and egotistical and refused to give me a refund. After what I had heard I knew there was no chance of this guy producing quality sound work capable of bein delivered to a real distribution platform. I paid through paypal, and raised a dispute through them however because the goods we're not tangible, PayPal was unable to get any of my money back.
Justin Van Hout is a scam. His prices are too low for quality work. He gets his imdb credits as an uncredited assistant and passes the bigger work off as his own. He took my money and didn't give me anything to show for it. Beware.
I contacted this individual because I was having major problems exporting from FCP X and needed post production sound editing. We discussed verbally the scope of the work and he made me sign a contract. He did help me export my audio files, but that is the extent of his help. The first skin of the edit is not what I'd call professional. I specifically was concerned with audio clips in a certian section of my film. I sent a link to the film for evaluation. At no point before I paid half the fee was I told, as I have been informed now by Justin Van Hout, that my project is a "trude" and that you can't edit s*. So either he was dishonest in his first assesment of my work or actually never listened to the film. He now says that the current edit is "as good as it gets". I believe that a student could probably have produced what I've been presented. The product does not reflect his credentials. Justin is erratic. He emails multiple times a day. I re-record VO at his request and had to set up a time with the actress. So, he hounded me about the score instead, even though I told him thst I wanted a clean sound edit to present to a composer so that my work looked professional. I eventually relented and used Pond 5 instead. At no time was a turn around time discussed, but after work began I was hounded by emails that became increasingly more and more hostile. He seemed to be pushing to get finished by a deadline ne never shared with me before we started to work. I can produce thses emails. Basically, he made me feel like how dare I give him notes on what I needed him to accomplish in the edit and basically told me my film was s**t. "You aren't ready for me". You are a student and I thought I'd "give you a chance". If nothing else because of the level of abusive behavior on his part I think entitled me to a complete refund. The work is unfinished.
