Parked in a lot that wasn't clearly labeled with what we found out later was "employee parking". Came out from the movie theater (which only offers paid garage parking...there is no lot), and found our car missing. We realized it had been towed, then saw the small sign with a phone number. Called and had to take Uber out to the lot (12 or so miles away). The message when you call says you must show proof of ownership AND a driver license. To us, that meant ubering home first for the registration copy, then traveling out to the lot where the car had been towed. Less than two hours elapsed between the time it was towed to the time we picked it up. The towing bill alone was $159.00. There were storage fees, daily rate fee, and something called an "impoundment fee". Total was $222.30, an absolute total rip off! Our Uber driver even told us he had heard of towing scams like this one before. This is PREDATORY TOWING at its worst.
On the morning of March 28th 2016, I had something to do in Chinese consulate of Houston (the mall's neighbor). I noticed there was a sign "customer parking only". But I planned on having breakfast in Einstein Bros Bagels Restaurant in the mall with my family, so I think I am the customer. After parking in the lot, I wanted to check how many people there were in the waiting line in the consulate, so we did not go into the restaurant directly. But in just two minutes, we came back and went into the restaurant for breakfast. I have the restaurant receipt and it shows I ordered the breakfast @9:47am when my car was still on the parking lot. About 40 minutes later, My family and I finished our breakfast and went out for the car, I found out my car disappeared. I called 911 for help @10:27am. I also tried to call the towing company number on the sign to check if they had my car. I explained that I was in fact a customer and that I had the receipt from the restaurant.
When I paid the tow fee and got the tow charge bill, the bill showed that the car check-in time was @10:14am, during which time, I was still in the Einstein Bros Bagels and having my breakfast with my family! In my case, I was for sure a customer of this mall when they towed my car. After explaining my situation, I was still forced to pay the tow fee to get my car back. To me, it looks like my car was stolen by the tow company and then I was forced to pay the thief in order to get my own car back, which is outrageous.
The only sign in the parking lot is "CUSTOMER PARKING ONLY", I am a customer, there is no reason they towed my car without my consent.
