Any school or organization considering hiring JEFF YALDEN as a speaker…I must urge you to proceed with extraordinary caution. I’ll admit his marketing materials look good, which makes sense because marketing materials are a set thing – a controlled environment of sorts. However, Jeff Yalden is truly a loose cannon. And you never know what you’ll get.
MANY schools I spoke with said that he would curse profusely, call teachers “d*********”, make homophobic or sexist jokes. Go on Facebook rants about how awful the school was because ONE person asked him not to cuss or they had to cut the assembly short by six-minutes, threatening to “scissor-kick” respected members of the community.
If you were my daughter I’d be taking you home and beating your a** for lack of respect.”
Jeff Yalden is a terrible role model and will create a nightmare of headaches for you.
We were having to calm down angry and upset parents for weeks over his presentation. Let alone the tone this “inspirational” speaker set for our students.
Please do your research, speak with some schools that have actually hired Jeff, and speak to some non-biased parties. He isn’t what he is marketed as or what you’d hope – quite the opposite.
I don’t wish Jeff ill. I simply want to save others from going through the nightmare we had to. I believe deep down he
Disrespectful to Teachers, Inappropriate and Useless for Kids
I was disturbed to hear about Jeff’s performance and complete disrespect of the teachers at Clinton Central in Indiana. Not only did he fail to explain any of these “tools” to cope with mental illness to the students, which he touts on his website profusely, but he also told teachers their “degrees were a useless waste of money” and not to start “bitching” because they “can’t help students” because they didn’t ask him any questions at the end of his rant. Both his presentation to students and teachers, he relied heavily on shocking the audience about his life experience without explaining any of the tools/coping mechanisms he learned to deal with his situations. He also made claims which appeared to conflict, such as being 47 and claiming to have been a motivational speaker for 30 years (when he was 17?) even though he was also in the military. He also claimed to work in education, even though he has no certification to be an educator. I hate to put anyone down who wants to help children, especially children with emotional distress, but Jeff - get your shit together. If you’re going to charge poor schools ~$5000 for a speech like this, I recommend focusing more on actually explaining the tools and behaviors for kids instead of relying so heavily on humor and the “shock factor”. The whole speech could have been so much more powerful if you could have stayed on track with your story, tried to teach life lessons more clearly from your mistakes, and made a point to TEACH students USEFUL TOOLS. Perhaps you’ve made better speeches in the past, but this is the only one I saw, so I am merely sharing the experience with others.
As a soon-to-be youth speaker, it would be an honor to be mentored by Jeff. I've seen practically every video, presentation, and social media post of his, and I have to say, he is 1 in 7 billion... His ability to connect with teens is truly awe-inspiring.
His program was cancelled at Bay View Middle School
HOWARD, Wis. (WBAY) - Howard-Suamico's superintendent released an apology to the district after students, parents and staff objected to a teen mental health speaker's presentation.
Jeff Yalden, who is billed at a Teen Mental Health speaker, gave a presentation Thursday at Bay Port High School.
Students and parents took to social media to express their feelings about the presentation. That started a back-and-forth between Yalden and students and staff on Twitter.
The Howard-Suamico School District says they decided to cancel a second event with Yandel at Bay View Middle School.
World languages teacher Justin Nelson tweeted, "This is 100 percent the right decision. Self-reflection of your messaging and tone is critical. The misogynistic, homophobic, and egotistical message of your speech will now be spared at Bay View. Perhaps you were unaware of them, but they were present."
He spoke at our school yesterday. It was terrible. His ego gets in the way of any message that was or could have been useful. He belittled teachers, administrators, parents and the kids themselves. He opened wounds and didn't provide a way to close them. We will spend weeks trying to fix this. If your looking at him coming to your school I highly discourage it. Awful!
