On July 25th, 2016, my daughter's first day of middle school, I purchased a maltipoo puppy from Jay Wakine for $800. During the 6 days we owned this puppy, I contacted the breeder on several occasions regarding our diffuculty with Lola (the maltipoo) eating and her energy levels. This dog never exhibited the normal activity of a 8 week puppy.
In the first 4 days, I took Lola to 2 different vets. Both questioned me about the age of the dog. I told both vets the breeder said the puppy was 8 weeks old and eating on her own. One vet suspected the puppy was 5 weeks old and said it was very odd she did not have her teeth.
The morning on the 6th day I woke up to a puppy who was lethargic with rapid breathing. I rushed her to the emergency vet to try and save her life. After several hours the vet said she was too far gone and she died. This was extremely upsetting to our whole family and my daughter would not stop crying or asking WHY this happened! I texted all this to the "breeder" and asked for a cash refund of the $800. He refused to refund my money. I send him a text, then an email and finally a letter requesting him to refund my money. This was all done over the course of several weeks. All communication stopped shortly after my request.
After speaking to other breeders, I learned of a puppy lemon law in AZ. It states if the puppy becomes ill and dies within 15 days of purchase, you are entitled to reimbursement of the cost of the puppy and/or vet expenses. Per ARS 44-1799.07 there is a presumption of illness or a congenital or hereditary defect that existed at the time of sale of the dog if it dies within 15 days after the purchaseser takes possession of the dog.
One of the vets I took the puppy to in the 6 days diagnosed an open fontanelle that should have been closed if the puppy was the age the breeder claimed. This is a hereditary condition and often indicates other birth defects. At the pet hospital the vet did blood work and it came back and said her white blood count was dangerously low. They said this can indicate she was born with a congenital defect, liver shunt or had a virus.
After no response from the breeder, I decided to pursue a small claims lawsuit which I won. The judge awarded me the full amount of the purchase of the puppy plus all court expenses and vet costs. I have tried unsuccessfully collecting the funds from the breeder with no response.
Since then I have learned this person has been evicted from his most recent home that he just moved into earlier his year. (This is after leaving the Larkspur address that I visited to purchase the puppy). Both these homes are located in expensive areas of AZ. I have also learned his legal name which is Jalal Wakine. He refered to a wife in my correspondance - her name is Bethany Baird. She has past complaints on her for dogs that have died or had parvo. These people are definitely in the business to make money no matter who they hurt. My hope is that NO ONE else has to go through what my family has experienced with these backyard breeders. I didn't go into this blindly. I researched his name, Jay Wakine, and called the vet he said he used for the puppies well visits. I no longer believe he took this puppy to an actual vet. I visited his home 2 times and both times the puppy was sleeping because he supposely just got done playing or eating. Now I believe that this was all a lie!
when i was 11, my siblings and i got our own precious puppy (maltipoo) for christmas. this was 2 years ago. i am turning 13 very soon. my family and i were so happy when we got him and we absolutely adored him. we named him milo. he was a very good dog. very sweet and lovable. my parents spent 800 dollars on him. my mom was never too fond of dogs but she loved milo so much. we also had a german shepard, who has always been friendly with other dogs but she did not like milo. later, we’d find out why.
the poor thing began to have diarrhea. a week later, i came home from school and my mom told me that he wasn’t doing well. he was barely moving, refused to eat or drink. the poor baby didn’t have any energy to live. that night, he was puking and coughing blood. we finally found a vet that was open and we were getting ready to take him. but he started breathing more and more slowly and we just held him. and the second he drew his last breath, i screamed and dropped to my knees and sobbed. my mom cried with me and my dad, who loved him just as much as we did, had to bury him. my siblings were at their other mom’s (they’re my step siblings) and my brother, who i’ve rarely ever seen cry, sobbed. that loss was one of the hardest losses i’ve ever had. i’m putting how my family and i felt because it doesn’t matter that we lost money. what matters is that 1. he knew this dog was sick and he let him die because he didn’t want to pay the bills to save him and 2. he put us through all of that pain. we texted him about this and he said it was our fault. we looked up what we thought milo died from based on his actions and the way he died, and we are very sure that it was parvo.
recently, we decided to get another dog and thought, “maybe it was our fault. maybe we should’ve seen the signs.”
and we looked at other reviews and other people have had the same experience. this man is disgusting. abusive. despicable. he deserves to feel the pain that all these poor animals felt. i hope he gets what he deserves. i advise you, DO NOT adopt from him. i am not sure how he isn’t in prison from animal abuse.
