Last year 2015 I got insurance with NCE Unified National Health my agent was Jason Gootner. My premium was over $350. The company I worked for closed so I could no longer afford that amount. I called and spoke with Jason and asked if he would get me on a plan with a lower cost. He agreed and told me that I was paying way too much and offered me a plan for approximately $150. I was told by Jason that I would be covered for everything. I have heart issues and I need to make sure that this insurance will cover everything. I was sent a new card with an effective date of January 2016 On March 11 I was having chest pains and went to the emergency room. I was told that I needed to go to another hospital that specializes in heart problems. They transferred me in an ambulance to Sierra Medical Center. My girlfriend called NCE unified Health and was assured that I have insurance. The lady on the phone told her that she had an old policy number so she gave her a new policy number. Later that day she called to make sure the hospital was in network but if it wasn't we would still be covered. I checked the directory and only 1 hospital in the plan and it is the county hospital!! We live in El Paso, Texas which is a pretty large city. She was also told that they want us to call before we go to a hospital to verify coverage. My girlfriend told her we didn't have the option because this was a life or death emergency. I was in the hospital for 8 days with pneumonia and Afib. I had a pacemaker/defiberator installed in my chest. When I got out of the hospital I got refunds from my insurance. Jason had told me that I would be getting a refund because I overpaid. Yesterday April 14 I received a bill and noticed that the insurance didn't pay anything. I called the insurance company and was told that I had a duplicate policy so they cancelled the old one and they called my phone and left a message asking if I wanted to stay with the insurance and since I didn't call them back they assumed that I didn't want it and cancelled my insurance. This was done while I was in the hospital. No message was left. Today we called again to get clarification and now they told me that our insurance was cancelled because when my original policy was cancelled and I was unable to get on a new plan for 12 months. I told her we were never given this information and we would have stayed with the insurance if we had this information. I have to have insurance because I have to go to the doctors quite a bit. I find it strange that as soon as the dr bills started coming in they cancel my insurance. I was never given any warning that they would cancel, I paid my premiums on time every month. Now we are stuck with dr bills that will probably be over $100,000. Is this even legal to do this? What do I do now? Do I have any recourse. I would appreciate any ones advise or help. I only work part time and take home $200 a week. I am never going to be able to pay these bills Otis El Paso, Texas
