J & F Home Maintenance & Handyman Services Reviews
Apr 9, 2016
I contracted John Fulkroad, owner of the company, J and F Home Maintenance Service, to retile a shower stall. John told me he was licensed to install tile in shower stalls and had been in business over 20 years. At first meeting, John appeared to be forthright, knowledgeable, and trustworthy.
John informed me the cost to remove the exiting tile in the shower stall, install new tile, a shower valve, shower head, shower door, and repaint the bathroom walls and trim was 4500.00; a 2300.00 deposit was required. I paid the deposit and signed the contract. John told me the job would take 5 days. This was the beginning of a nightmare. The job took 10 days. Ten days I was inconvenienced; the bathroom was left in total shambles each day John left. In addition, John failed to purchase the correct amount of tile and kept running out. He needed to return to Home Depot on several occasions to purchase more tile. Is this the action of a qualified/licensed contractor? No, it is not..
When I picked out tile with John, I also chose a Moen shower valve, which he wrote in his book along with the name of tile I chose so he could make the purchases. Instead of purchasing and installing the Moen shower valve I chose, John purchased and installed a Glacier Bay (Home Depot brand) valve. Glacier Bay valves do not have the same reputation as Moen. Further, it was not what I paid for. I called John concerning this issue and he tore into me stating that what he purchased was high quality and installed correctly. I also informed him that the valve plate was not secured to the tile and the shower head was loose. It could be easily moved around on the wall. I told John to just finish the job; finish installing the tile, as well as shower door, and try to make it aesthetically pleasing as possible, given the fact that the surfaces of the bullnose pieces looked unfinished and had sharp edges. John took the liberty of coming to my home unannounced and told me to purchase the right valve for him to install. I did as he requested and ended up spending an additional 200.00 on top of the initial 4500.00 he quoted me. When I asked John why he did not purchase the Moen shower valve after he wrote the name of this specific valve his book, he told me he "forgot". Seriously, he purchased a lesser expensive valve and pocketed the difference in cost of the two valves.
John’s work was assessed by a licensed contractor and inspector. Both individuals found bullnose pieces uneven and sharp, the surface of the tiles are uneven. The shower floor does not pitch so that water heads toward the drain. Instead, the shower floor was laid so water pools in the corners of the shower. The shower door was installed improperly such that water seeps under the sweep and onto the floor so that the bathroom floor is soaking wet after a shower. The shower valve and shower head are not centered on the wall. The shower head i 1 inch to the left of the center of the valve. The shower head flange is loose
This man claims he is licensed. After a heated debate, he told me in earnest that he is a licensed handyman. Really, why is there an alert with the BBB stating there is no record of a license for this company in over a year. In addition, the county license for a handyman is to perform basic tasks, none of which include demolishing and retiling a shower stall He is a fraud and misrepresents what he is allowed to do in terms of construction. Again, John is a handyman, unlicensed. The only receipt I have from the purchases made is for the shower door. The tile and supplies did not cost 2200.00. I contacted John, asking him for half (2225.00) so the work could be rectified. Again, more lies and fraud. John told me he would send the money. Funny, for such an upstanding man, I haven't seen a dime, and he has not contacted me with an explanation as to why he has not returned half the funds to me. This man is a fraud, a dishonest human being, and I would not recommend him to anyone, not even to change a light bulb. You cannot believe a word he utters. He does substandard work, but represents himself as a qualified contractor. Buyer beware of the unlicensed fraud!
