I was on my computer closing a website when a loud alarm went off accompanied by a message across my screen stating that I had a virus & not to close that page. The instruction was to call Microsoft immediately at the number shown to report the problem. I was immediately fearful & did as instructed. The person answering was Indian with an American name. I retired 2 years ago from a major corporation & all our tech support was outsourced to India so I didn't think twice about it. I was instructed how to allow them access to my computer to see what the problem was. Once in , they said I had the "WannaCry" virus & had I heard of it. Since I hadn't, they showed me a google page explaining all about it. They said I had no anti virus protection on my computer& asked how many devises I had. They looked at my laptop as well. They went through files & supposedly deleted the infected ones. They said they could load an anti virus program on my machines. $199 for 2 years, $299 for 5 years for up to 5 devises& $349 for lifetime protection. I took the best value of lifetime protection. I felt much more secure until later that afternoon my sister, daughter& son in law said I had been scammed.
