I made a reservation on 8/4/17 for a 9/15/17 stay and then had to cancel on 8/7/17, 3 days later, as I had a family emergency. I contacted the owner multiple times, as well as HomeAway customer service, to cancel within the cancellation period. When I called initially (8/7/17) customer service told us we could get a refund to later found out that we were rejected a refund. Jonathan, a US Trust & Security Specialist, said that "they understand that I feel that this whole situation is confusing because of the different information that I was provided. However, the Trust and Security agent reviewed my request and provided us with a decision based on information they have". We texted, email and phoned the listed owner several times to no avail. We basically lost $658 for a two-night vacation stay in Florida, where we won't be able to even go due to a hurricane in the area. How is this a fair practice? To me this is a legitimate scam. Do not conduct business with these companies, HomeAway® | VRBO® | VacationRentals™.
We recently stayed at Hucks Hideaway in Donalsonville Georgia at Lake Seminole. You read all these great reviews on the place so we booked it. When we got there we were amazed and not in the good way. I think the pictures on Homeaway.com website were taken 10+ years ago. We stayed three nights and survived. We were told that all the major carriers for cell phone service worked great there(lie). We were told to bring a hot spot if we wanted internet. Well if there is no cell service then how are you supposed to use it. $80.00 dollars waisted . We were told there were 3 covered areas to park your boat(lie). You can put your boats under there covered areas if it is a boat in the back of your truck, but in which the covered areas leak. You are not allowed to fry fish inside which is understandable in which we were told that there was power outside to run your fryers(lie). Then you go inside. The cabin was so cluttered you had no where to unpack. Every drywall seam was busted open. The laminate wood in the kitchen had so many cracks if you stepped in the wrong spot you would get glued to the floor. The big screened porch had so many tears in it you really didn't have to use the door if you didn't want to. Then the privat dock they had is good as long as you don't walk on it because it rocks so bad and put together so poorly that grabbing the hand rails will just about cause you to fall in. Those were the good parts of the trip. I get home and receive an email on our stay. Well, me being the nice guy I am I left a 3 star rating, which in my opinion was exaggerated trying to help them out . Three days after my review the phone calls started. Not 1 not 2 but 12. Then the texts, 17 in total. And of course the emails. The lady (Julie) wanted me to take my review down. I am a honest person and feel like people should know what they are getting. So I said no. It has gotten so bad she try's to insult my integrity and sexuality on her business emails . Please do not deal with her because the rest and relaxation you my get at her cabin will be robbed from you when yo get home and she harasses you for the next 3 weeks.

Word of caution about Homeaway: they do not stand behind their quotes and have waited to inform me that I do indeed have to pay a higher fee PLUS their useless service fee of $144 until two weeks prior to my stay, making it impossible to find another place to stay. This is a quote from their final e-mail "Why do you see a different quote in your traveler dashboard? Currently, there is an issue with site displaying accurate quotes in the traveler dashboard when you book a property such as the one you did where they use software that works with our site. All of their information is fed to our site. What you are seeing on your traveler dashboard is getting lost in translation." So Homeaway explains away their issue after weeks of trying to resolve this issue. When I called Homeaway to simply request the "service fee" refund, the representative repeated over and over again the same thing - that the original contract had the correct amounts, which I did not receive until after I made payment to the realtor. When I did receive the information with the different amount, I was in contact with Homeaway almost on a daily basis to figure this out. Every person (and believe me, there were many) I spoke with agreed that I only owed the lower amount, that is, until last Friday. Do not book with Homeaway - go directly to a realtor!
Inquiried for a rental house from HomeAway.com website and received an email looking like HomeAway on my Inquiry from like the owner. When asked for a phone call to discuss was told they want it in writing, so would communicate with emails. When agreed on the property I paid with a wire transfer, which was a preffered method and HomeAway.com uses it generally. When closer to the date asked about details and received no response back, called teh owner listed and later found that it was a criminal activity. Filled police report.
