I receieved an email from Hightail.com claiming that my credit card was declined and asking me to click on a link to "update my billing information." They had the last four digits of my credit card listed, but no information on what purchase prompted the attempt to charge my card. I looked the company up online to determine what services it provided. It appears to be a filesharing service. I have never attempted to purchase anything from this site. I believe the email is a scam or a form of marketing to get people to look up their site. I had the same thing happen a few months ago with another online startup. I sent an email and left a phone message letting them know that I would be filing a report with both the Better Business Bureau and the Consumer Protection Finance Bureau. Unfortunately, the latter can only address loans and financial services at this point. They do not have jurisdiction over consumer services. I am still letting them know about this, as I believe it is becomming a more common form of product launch. It is my hope that they will branch out into investigations of this kind of behavior. Currently, I am waiting for the company to respond to my many attempts to get in touch with them. I do not yet know if they actually tried to run my card, but I am concerned that they have gotten access to some of my private information (email account and part of my credit card number).
