In my opinion Ms. Schmidt is not fit to be a learning specialist or an individual who evaluates children or grade school level children. She gave us a devastating report that our child had serious learning problems in the second grade and needed to be evaluated and possible didn't belong in the school they were attending. This obviously was overwhelming for us as parents because no other teacher or school administrator had ever told us that there were any issues with our child. Our child was well adjusted and performed well in school but quite a bit younger than the other children in the class because many of the children were held back or just had an older birthday.
Ms. Schmidt was strong with her accusations that our second grade child had learning problems, needed to be tested and maybe was not fit for the school. We then took her advice and went to two differnet specialists, both who came highly recommened. These specialists were very expensive and made our child feel like something was wrong with him/her (i will leave this for confidentiality) and Ms. Schmidt made him/her feel like he/she was not intelligent and "had problems." This was completely devestating for our child and our family.
After thorough evaluations from two independant specialists, they both determined that our child was above average in intelligence and had NO learning disabilities. They were both surprised that the teacher would treat a child this way, making them feel incompetent. They also informed us that teachers, administrators and us a parents would have seen signs prior to second grade if there were any sign of a problem.
This teatment by Ms Schmidt and the entire process negatively took a toll on our child for quite a few years. Our child proceeded on at the school, feeling inadequate and "dumb" for the next few years. When we researched Ms Schmidts background, we don't feel that she is or was qualified to make those type of assesments. Our child moved on to achieve great accademic success dispite the setbacks and emotional termoil that Ms. Schmidt caused for our child. Our child is at the very top of the class now and I write this so hopefully no one else has to endure what our child and our family did from Ms Schmidt.
