What a rip off! I went in there with 5 brand spanking new craft books. I bought these books on a whim and then decided when I got then I had changed my mind....I'm allowed to do that right? Anyway, I brought these books in there and they are in stellar condition and new, within the last 2 years or so. I bought them for at least $15 off Amazon. You know what they offered me? $5 for all 5!!! I couldn't believe it. Don't go there. Besides that they were rude and smelly lol
This review is for Half Price Books on West-port Kansas City Mo. I went in there to sell some books, movies and games. The books were Distributional Justice Theory and Measurement; Regional Anesthesia Analgesia and Pain Management; Malpractice and Medical Liability; 5 brand new paperback books; 1 wii game and 1 play station game. All the books are brand new and two of the books are listed on there website for the original going price of 184.00. Same book is listed on Amazon for 206.00. They are ripping people off and I think it is sickening. They didn't think I knew what my books were worth and tried to take advantage of me. Now I don't expect to get the full retail value but atleast a descent percentage and the fact that I had all that stuff and expensive books and they only offered me $13.00 when they are selling one of my books on their site for almost $200. I felt this needed to be mentioned, I bet they get a lot of people in there that don't know any better and will just take the price they give for the books. They have you go walk around while they make up these ridiculous prices. I am a reseller I buy merchandise by the pallet and I am always getting expensive books that I sell on ebay and amazon I went online to find a place to sell some of the books quicker and came across half price books, I called them and they said they couldn't give quotes over the phone and that they took all kinds of books but I would need to come down there in order to get a quote. I told them I would be driving far and needed them to at least quote one of my books and they declined so I drove down there and had my intelligence insulted with the price they gave of $13 please don't waste your time with this company, they are ripping people off like no tomorrow!
Visited Des Moines, IA, store on 10/3/17 for the purpose of testing this chain store. I have seen multiple bad reviews of this chain and wanted to test them myself to see if the bad reviews were are true. Unfortunately, the bad reviews are true, if not a major understatement.
I have been involved in online selling of books, antiques, collectibles, and other goods for 17 years and similar offline sales since the late 1970s when I was buying and selling items as a kid. I have sold on eBay, Amazon, my own web site, and other other 3rd party web sites. Frankly at this point time I can practically sell online in my sleep due to the many years of past experience I have. I contacted Half Price Books corporate office two years ago regarding racial profiling and discrimination. I was assured then that I would not encounter this in the future. Unfortunately things have not changed. Today I was followed and watched as I shopped. The staff is unapologetic about it as it continues to go on. And I mentioned it to someone on staff that I complained about it two years ago and there has not been a change. . He was like "oh well". If you are African American and have experienced racism and profiling at this store please contact me through this site for a class action lawsuit. This is clearly everyday practice and things will not change until people hold them accountable. The profiling and racism will deter people from gaining information and knowledge. It definitely made my shopping experience unbearable. And when you call the Half Price Book stores with a black tone or dialect they are rude and disrespectful. If you have experienced this same type of discrimination and harassment please voice your concerns and complaints online. More importantly let's let our voices be heard collectively as well by contacting me through this site.
