H&R Block Reviews

  • Jan 26, 2024

I have used various types of tax filing software over many years. I have used Turbo Tax, H&R Block, and a few others. Turbo Tax costs more than H&R Block for the same level of product. Turbo Tax has a superior UI, in short very nice! One year, I bought both to compare. The bottom line was they both had exactly the same numbers. So, saving a couple of bucks was for me. But regardless, I still oscillating between the two. I used H&R Block in tax year 2022 and am using it again in tax year 2023. So this year I put in enough information to get a taxable amount and the tax on that amount calculated. I put taxable income of $16,206 and H&R Block calculated a tax of $1,623, nothing was between these two lines. The calculation should be $16,206 x 10% = $1,621, a difference of $2. So what would happen if you had actual taxable income of $216,206? Would that be off by $2 every $16,206?

So for fun I guess, I spent two chat sessions with two different agents. The solution was I made a mistake in my calculation. Both agents offered me a chance to chat with a "tax pro". I asked was that free, the appointment is free. I declined of course.

I am now wondering of all the times I filed my return with H&R Block. But likewise, does Turbo Tax operate in this manner as well?

Anyone have thoughts on this?

The main reason to be loyal to a tax SW company is the ability to import data from the prior year's return.

With HR Block Business 2019, it is impossible to import the prior year's return if the 2018 and 2019 return software are not both installed on the same computer. So, if you switched computers between 2018 and 2019, you are out of luck. There's no way to save or export the 2018 return, trasfer it and import it into the 2019 software on a different computer.

I filed my 2019 tax return with H&R Block as I have for many years. Included in the documents filed by my tax preparer was a 1099C Cancellation of Debt in the amount of $1250.00. Block deducted the payment for the debt regardless and has yet to communicate or correct their error. I first addressed this issue with them on February 27, 2020.

The IRS deposited $2664.80, the balance of my refund, on 2/26/2020. HRBlock deposited $325 into my bank account and are unable to tell me what happened to the balance of my refund, but they also have not replaced the funds. I made arrangements for payoff of $638 for a bill based on that refund amount and was forcesd to default on the agreement, making me responsible for the full amount of the debt, over $3k.

As a result my children and I are couch-surfing. This has been expressed multiple times and nothing has been done. I get excuses and "hurry up and wait" responses.

H&R BLOCK - I was ready to pay my $5k due, all was well 4/14. I called to confirm everything again (yes last minute); spoke to a great person.... We decided I could get back $60 without one of the Services.... :-) I then asked if I should get rid of the Form 8829 (as I took Standard this Year)… he referred me to a Supervisor so they could delete the Form.

THE SUPERVISOR ending up DELETING ALL of Tax Years back to 2011.... WTF??? He said hold on, and never came back after 2hrs, 48mins, and 39 seconds..... ALL IS GONE... I have no words for my mess... BUT BYE-BYE H&R BLOCK!!!

If ever there were a a perfect showcase for bureaucratic incompetence and abject failure at actual customer service, it would be the litany of lies and blame-shifting and exponentially-more-frustrating phone calls I have suffered at H&R Block’s hand. Of course the corporate customer service line is the most flatly uninterested in fulfilling your promises or fixing your errors, because they’re an endless series of representatives basically hired to take an endless series of phone calls where they repeat pre-printed lines masquerading as help, as they are basically hired to do.

In fact, the supervisor on the corporate line was so unable to budge from his prescribed script and insistence of the policy that he actually agreed with me that my tax “professional” Pamela Knobelach at the local office at Loughborough Commons was either incompetent or untrained - the woman I paid over 300 to my taxes, a decision that has become more and more an obvious mistake as this simple attempt to get H&R to simply stop holding hostage my federal refund and deposit it into my account, the option Pamela presented and I chose, has escalated into full-scale debacle. His non-solution “service” was to tack on a form and five more business days to something that the local office already told me would happen today, because as we all know, appending additional wonton business days to an electronic process that should take seconds may be the only actual goal for most corprorate customer service representatives.

But it’s even more jarring to get three different stories from three different people that work in the same small strip-mall office yet seem to have never met, giving the impression that they may not even work for the same company. The first employee I spoke to this morning verified my info and cheerfully told me my refund was posting by direct deposit today and would definitely be there by 5pm. I was reassured because it had not yet been instilled in me that simple statements by your employees should apparently be regarded as lies, so I was disappointed when this did not happen.

So I called back at 7pm, where a decidedly less-friendly (and bordering on openly-hostile) employee directly contradicted not only her coworker I spoke to this morning, but doubled-down on telling me the information my tax professional printed in my tax refund is wrong - she insisted that in my situation, processing my refund was not even H&R Block’s job, that it would be sent directly from the IRS to my bank, for my bank to handle, and that the bank would also somehow know to send H&R Block the 500 dollars for the loan on my refund. An infuriating failure to be sure, but one almost must marvel at her willingness to state wrong information so easily disproved by the documentation her office gave me. Realizing the futility of speaking to this employee, I requested to speak to the initial person that handled my taxes when I went in.

As a human with the ingrained ability of pattern recognition, it probably goes without saying that this phone call was another futile hoop-jump only resulting in blame-shifting in this bureaucratic environment designed to enable each and every employee to deny responsibility for their failures once they’ve received their money. (Extraneous but illuminating background fact - even she could not deny her responsibility that my refund was initially rejected by the IRS because she entered the EIN for one of my investment accounts inaccurately - perhaps I should have anticipated how badly my experience with H&R Block would get when their professional with decades of experience failed at data-keying and proof-reading, perhaps the two most basic expectations one could have in a person hired and paid hundreds of dollars to do one’s taxes.)

Pamela told me I actually needed to talk to someone else - a different bank - not my bank, the bank I gave her my account information for when she told me my refund could be direct deposited and naturally assumed it would be in a timely manner, but the intermediary bank it gets sent to so they can get back their refund loan before sending actually sending it to my bank. She states that this is all that she can do, and her tone indicates it’s all she is interested in doing. Of course, having spent all day dealing with this and waiting for one person to give me consistent or helpful information, or even express a genuine desire to assist me, it’s too late tonight for me to even attempt making another call and so the ordeal stretches on.

Will you, the H&R Block social media team, care about one customer’s awful experience with your company, or do anything to remedy the situation? I hope so, because even though not one interaction with any H&R Block employee so far has demonstrated an interest in doing their job, the social media team is often different. I will never use H&R Block to touch a tax form of mine again, because it’s been too thoroughly impressed what a mistake that was. But you have the power to blunt the rage and regret I feel for having paid so much money for your failures, and give me a reason to not spend so much more time posting my experience on every customer-service-related website on the internet - having worked in customer service myself, I know them all - and dissuading friends and family for the rest of my life from making the same mistake I did by doing their taxes with H&R Block.

I went in to do a Emerald Advance and the pitch is you can get up 3000.00. Well the catch is that you have to 1st file your taxes with them and then the determination is made on HOW MUCH YOU CAN RECIEVE. Me a single mom that is in a financal situation only hears 3000.00 even though I didn't even need that much but whatever i was in a bind. I do play a small part in this because I did go ahead and take the loan.

Now, after 421.00 for prep and all the other fees to do my taxes. I was only approved for 500.00 which didn't take care of my situation so i'm still scrambling for money. Well, then i'm told we can do a one time transfer, when our taxes hit. Now, I'm finding out there is no way to get your money off this card unless you use an ATM which cost money each time you use it, can only pull $500 at a time, you can do an over the county transfer for $30 something dollars, and you can't use this card anywhere.

I have bills to pay over $500. This is a true RIP OFF and I will encourage any and everybody not to use this service if you can help it.

A warning to all consumers considering the H&R Block Tax "Academy", don't. I had seen this so-called "academy advertised in the past and this year I decided to take the bait. I signed up for the course and paid the $149 registration fee. H&R Block states that the course itself if free and that the $149 fee covers the electronic materials used within the course. It stands to reason that they would say the course is free, such a disclaimer gives them some protection against having to issue refunds for a course that is truly a farce, it's worthless. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting, graduated Summa c*m Laude and at the top of my class. The latter in mind, when I say that H&R Blocks tax course is worthless, take my word for it, my free advice will save you $149.

On the first night of class I arrived on time at the scheduled location, a local Block branch office. The class was held in the back room, a very sizable room that had rows of tables that held approxmately thirty or more desktop PC's. All looked well at first glance but I was quickly told to sit at a PC marked as "working" , only six or seven of them were working on that first night class. Luckily, as the class started we only had a mere 4 students meaning the lack of computers would not be an issue. The second night of class, we were down to about five working comuters, two more had decided to stop working. On or about the fourth or fifth night of class, still only five computers and down to three students, one decided to leave. The student who left was very wise as the course was already a clear waste of time and money.

The course instructor, nice guy and a IRS Enrolled Agent advised us that he was taking a short leave of absence and we would have a substitute instructor for two of the scheduled classes. The substitute also a nice guy and enrolled agent was handed the clasroom from hell. On his first night, again only five of the thirty plus computers available were usable, the overhead projectors had also decided to stop working. The susbstitute decided to wing it, not knowing what to do he simply picked three fairly lengthy exercises located in electronic course materials and told us to spend the evening in class on our own, working on those exercises. Finally the second night with the subsititute was about my limit. In the latter, I arrived for class on time and was told that a few more of the computers had quit working, I moved from computer to computer trying to find one that would work. The other two remaining students had chosen one working computer at the very beginnning and stayed with that PC each night of class. I had also stayed with one computer, unfortunately that first night the substitue instructor arrived and found the overhead projector not working, he instead took up shop at the PC I had been using all along which left me trying eight different computers before finally finding one that halfway worked. I had spent almost 25 minutes in my serach for a working computer. Upon my return for the second night with the substitute I found that his using the computer I had been using, rendered it no longer usable, it would not connect to the internet as required for the class.

I finally walked away, opting not to return to the class for completion of the remaining seven weeks (three nights per week). I wrote it off as a lesson learned, I should have realized that given we only had four students, someone must have known something that I didn't but, I do now. Ironically, H&R Blocks states that the course is free but that they must charge the $149 fee to cover the electronic online material. I could not help but notice the significant similarities beween Blocks online materials and an educational textbook titled: Federal Taxation 'Individuals' by Pearon Publishers. I should note here that Pearson Publishers receives none of the $149 fee Block charges and in reality, that fee does not cover the online materials as H&R Block says it does. On the first night of class, the instructor (a Block employee) stated that the only pay he recieves for teaching the course is the $149 that each student pays to take the course. I say again, if you've been entertaining the though of taking the H&R Block Tax Academy course, DON'T.

They ripped me off on my money I suppose to got 4000 back ant I only got 3000 and they said every thing was gonna be free

I was receiving 3712 dollars into account. IRS stars they deposited that amount into account. What actually was deposited was 3059 dollars a difference of 653 dollars. I spent hours then days trying to find where the money had gone. Finally I was told by IRS that there was 2 accounts on my direct deposit. I stated I only had one but asked about other account. I was given account number and phone number associated with the account. I called and found it to be H@R Block emerald advance account. I was told by the first guy that after fees 604 dollars was placed into account. After telling them i knew nothing of such account I was them transferred to another guy who said after placing me on 5 minute hold money was taken from a loan from 2007 shock I never got and if I had got why 11 years later am I finding out on my own this way. I never received and letter or debt collection or credit report. Why was this not taken back if so in 2007 or at worst 2008? Why was I never advised 16 days earlier when money was taken a reason for it being taken? Nothing at all in 11 years of money owed. I was told account was closed and no info was available? How can you collect on a account that doesn't even exist? I honestly feel this was embezzled and taken. If I had received and letter or was told in advance I could feel better about this although I owe them nothing. I have been given the run around and basically don't know where to go from here.

H&r block is a scam they take advantage of people getting EIC they tell you that it's only going to cost $163 to do your federal and state return until you go down there and they see that you're cleaning EIC and then they charge you for $438. I don't understand how they could get away with this. And today I received a text message saying that my taxes were loaded onto my card by 10 a.m. and it is well past that. So I called the Emerald card that they give you and the lady said she cannot help me and don't understand why they gave me a text so I screenshot it when on the account and there is nothing on there. I got my state yesterday I want to go take some money out nobody ever said that it takes $7 to take an withdraw out $7 dollars why don't they tell you that H&R Block before they give you the card instead they just hurry and rush you out the door for the next client to rip off. This is unbelievable how they could do this two people and get away with it something has to be done. The lady at H&R Block told me after I told her I wanted the money to go in my checking account she told me about the card to Emerald Card so I said yeah if it's not going to cost anything I'll go with it but you didn't say nothing about $7 every time you take out money that's unbelievable so $438 for getting your taxes done and $7 every time you take a cash advance out they're going to get well over $1,000 from me it is such a scam I am willing to pay cash to put a lawsuit on this company I don't even care what it takes. I went on Facebook and there's over hundreds and hundreds of people on there complaining about H&R Block how many people does it take for them the IRS and the Better Business Bureau the take action I made a report with all three and I'll continue to do the same thing this is hard-working American people's money

I have a serious issue with H & R Block. We had our taxes done at two of their offices in 2015. The first office’s return showed we owed the Federal Government $3500.00 which shocked me no end. Without any help from H&R Block I found there was an error in our insurance coverage which led to major penalties. After almost a year I got the corrected information from our insurance company we went to the second H&R Block office which corrected the insurance error only to inform me that we now owed the IRS over $13,000.00. Upon receiving this information I was scared and went on line and found Federal Tax Resolution and signed a contract for $3500.00 to have them see if there was anything they could help me with as in reduction or a payment plan.

Federal Tax Resolution referred me to a CPA in Tucson who discovered H & R Block had wrongly included a W4 form showing Sheila had earned money from a Company that I had worked for but she had not. That error was the reason for the huge increase we supposedly owed the IRS. When the independent CPA completed the amended return showing the errors made by H & R Block a refund due us for over $1300.00 from the IRS and over $250.00 from the State of California. Then he took the information back to H & R Block and allowed them to make the corrections for a turnaround of over $14,000.00.

H & R Block refunded me the costs of the two office visits but not the $2650.00 I had to pay Federal Tax Resolution, the third party I had to pay to have H&R Block’s errors corrected. Accordingly, I made a formal complaint to the Arizona State Attorneys General regarding H&B Block’s refusal to reimburse me for the third parties fee. I just received a letter from the State Attorneys General stating that my complaint was “frivolous”. Really? $2650 and over two year’s worth of headaches is frivolous? Now who do I cojntact for help with H&R Block?

  • Sep 13, 2017

H&R Block offers a "peace of mind" where you pay an extra fee and they claim to take responsibility for any forms that are not filed and penalties. Funny thing, I just recieved a letter in the mail claiming that I owe $4,000 in back taxes and penalties for a form that was never filed by their office. At first the accountant said it would handled but instead she disappeared and H&R Block has yet to resolve the issue. They are attempting not to honor their agreement for the peace of mind.

DO NOT USE H&R BLOCK TO FILE YOUR TAXES! You'll have a better peace of mind with a legitimate tax professional.

Over $1000 was stolen from emerald refund card in the course of a month. They were very obviously fradulent charges- ie, hundreds of dollars spent at various drug stores in a single day while I was at work, within less than a second of each other. I was told that they made a final decision denying my claim and that there is no way to contact them directly.

A withdrawl was made from an ATM on March 23 rd, that was obviously not me. i was told it was from an ATM on majestic lodge, there is not an ATM on that whole road.I reached out to the Emerald card customer service 10 times, and sat on hold until i hung up( 20 minutes). The employees did nothing to try to resolve this issue, nor did the supervisors. The withdrawl was for $364.00 and i know that wasnt me please do what you can to find out what happened thank you and have a blessed day.

H&R Block ripped is off on a line of credit as as well almost a month to transmit our state taxes . We owe for a line of credit that we didn't want or use our funds were misappropriated . The line of credit is actually supposed of been put in a savings account . It didn't show up as a savings deposit. We tried to resolve this issue time and time again . Some how our money had been put as a line of credit . We did not want to pay back money that was already ours and with interest . . So then we were told it was fixed . It wasn't we get a bill stating that we had pulled the credit amount . The credit amount was never pulled it was supposed to put to the savings account to fix their mistake . Do now we are still owing money for money that was misappropriated by them .

I registered from the internet to take the tax preparer's course from H & R Block. I paid roughly $200 for the course in the winter of 2015. The office location of the training offered was 5231 Delmar, St. Louis, MO 63112. Phone 314 361-5241.

Exams for the course are taken on a computer. After the final exam, my computer displayed that I had passed the course. After finishing the course, and having a great desire to work for the company, I received no contact from anyone in the company. There was no contact from my instructor Sandra Latimore or the Area Supervisor Shelley Hotchkiss. After a couple months I contacted the office of Shelley Hotchkiss who gave me her business card personally. I contacted her office and left my name and number six times in the next few months and there was no response.

I contacted my instructor Ms. Latimore and tried to get information about working for the company from her. Ms. Latimore could give me no information whatsoever on if I could work for the company, who I could call regarding working, or how to get in touch with Ms. Hotchkiss.

I am extremely dissappointed that a national company would take the money of people and discard them as though the company is too big to answer to the average layman.

I don't know what else to call it but a rip off if you advertise training so people can work for you, take their money, give them training, tell them they passed the training and then dissappear.

I woke up on March 10, 2017, to text messages saying that over $800.00 was spent on my Emerald Card. I immediately called my local office who gave me the number of the fraud department. I was assured that my money would be replaced almost immediately after I spoke to these people. I spoke to three separate reps. The first told me I had to file a fraud claim. No problem, Inwas absoloutely prepared to do this. The second told me that my money would b replaced and even had me complete a survey at the end of our discussion, which ofcourse after hearing all money would be replaced I was more than happy to give them a gleaming review. However, I began thinking that I had deleted my texts the night before so more charges than I had originally thought could have been on there. I asked a third rep to please give me my transaction for the month, being the 10th, it was not so much of a request. I noticed hesitation in her voice and low and behold, I was rigght. It had actually began on the 8th and there were about 2 transactions that I did not make. The thing that bothers me is that I asked the first two reps about ITunes and gaming purchases as I did not make any of those, in fact, I have never owned an IPhone, and wonder why tney did not reveal these purchases. Also, when the fraud claim came it only had 1 of the many transactions. I physically added the others that I had on my phone myselfm Moreover, I was denied a copy of my purchases becaise it was not the end of the month, but the card had been cancelled so obviously no more charges would be made to that account number. My advice.is...if U have to get the Elmerald Card, dump the money in your bank account as soon as possible because I am findimg hundreds of cases just like mine on the net.

H & R Block offered to put my income tax refund on their Emerald Card. Claiming a portion of it would come quicker. When I asked if there was a charge the tax preparer said'"No." The refund, nor a portion, came any quicker. Now I am told I. Order to take my money off of the card to use it as cash, they will charge me $35.00 fee. If I with draw money from an ATM there is a fee as well per transaction.

  • Feb 11, 2017

I hoped when I called them about this issue they would let me speak to someone abouit this This fee is outragious! I did not know about this because when I went to Bank I asked if there was a fee? they charged me 35.00 to get my own money off the card.

Their poorly trained tax preparers made a significant error in our taxes,(by inputting the wrong numbers in the wrong blocks), costing us $1384.47 and they failed to file the required claim to honor their Peace of Mind Guarantee. The IRS has sent us numerous letters, all of which we have taken straight into H&R, only to get the run around.. It has now been 2 years and we are still trying to get it resolved!!! They keep telling us to just pay it and they will eventually reimburse us; we refused to do that!. We would go in to the local office and sit for an hour or more each time, waiting for her to use her "special" number to get ahold of the IRS - she would hang up the phone after minutes stating that the wait to get through to the IRS was too long;

So, one day while sitting there with her, I took initiative and called the same number and made it through in just 7 minutes! I put the phone on speaker, as we listened together to the IRS rep stating what was wrong and what needed corrected. I watched her take our paperwork and shove it in another folder and say that she would fax everything. This has been the same situation (over and over and over) for 2 years now. They always suggest the same thing: sending an amendment...but obviously the first 10 amendments (all of which were the same, did NOT work!!). The IRS has now taken the money from us and now it is even more difficult to get anyone to help.

Marge dodges my calls and tries to schedule me to come in weeks later..and when I say NO and tell her I am on my way right then, she leaves the office before I can get there!. We are just trying to get our money back. We know it was THEIR error, as acknowledged by Marge when the IRS rep stated that numbers were not entered correctly. We paid for the Peace of Mind guarantee to protect us but when it comes down to it, that guarantee is just an extra way for them to get more money from you. BEWARE. Now, I googled to find out what else we can do and sure enough, there are hundreds of complaints from others that have gone through this :( We need a class action law-suit.

I had my income tax filed in an HR Block Premium office in Lakewood Colorado in 2013. Two months ago I was contacted on 6/27/2015 by the IRS stating I owed about $4,748.00 plus $187.00 in interest. At the time of filing I purchased the Peace of Mind product. I called HR Block immediately about this and they had me come in to their office. When I went in the person helping me seemed more concerned with covering up the mistakes made than correcting them. He tried convincing me that I did not have a Peace of Mind Claim. I became very irate and told him I wanted to file a claim and he finally gave in and went to talk to his manager and when he came back a claim was filed.

As it turned out when my taxes were filed the H&R tax person filing my taxes forgot to add a $7110. 00 mortgage tax credit and did not advise me on third party sick pay I had received. So, a Peace of Mind Claim (645804) was filed on 7/13/2015. It has been going on eight weeks since the filing. I have called H&R Block at 1-800HRBLOCK on numerous occasions asking for the status of the claim and keep being told I would receive an answer within a few days. This was weeks ago. According to the Peace of Mind contract it states processing takes 4-6 weeks. The customer service people at this number have hung up the phone on me on several occasions and seemed to be annoyed because I am asking questions concerning the processing of the complaint.

In the Peace of Mind contract it states that if my claim is denied that I would receive a letter as to the reason why. To date I have neither received a letter stating why my claim has been denied or been reimbursed for the $4935.00 for the Peace of Mind Claim. I believe I deserve an answer from them.
