We paid Goldeneyes Retrievers (Chuck Bolinger) $900 for an adult Labrador Retriever, Patsy, from one of their sires and dams. Chuck said she was a little thin and shy because she had been at drug dog school for 6 months (she flunked). He never said anything about her having diarrhea. He had her for about 6 weeks after we put a deposit on her.
Patsy arrived looking like a walking skeleton. Every rib stuck way out. She was also a scared, cowering wreck.
With us, Patsy became a happy, sassy dog in 2 weeks. She gained weight on a high-calorie dog food but kept having diarrhea. Then her diarrhea got worse and she started losing weight. The vet diagnosed pancreatic insufficiency and inflammatory gastrointestinal disease. On pancreatic enzymes, she rapidly gained weight and is now a normal weight. She still has diarrhea but less often.
We will always take very good care of Patsy. But the pancreatic enzymes, which she will always need, cost $100 a month. If Patsy lives 10 more years, this adds up to $12,000.
On August 1, 2016, I texted Chuck to explain Patsy’s medical problems and ask for a refund. He sent me a text claiming I knew the whole story, he had no idea she was sick, and he would refund our money if I brought her back to him. I texted him that we would not return her because he would kill her. He did not deny this and did not respond at all.
On August 17, 2016, I sent Chuck another text asking for a refund. No response from him.
On August 22, 2015, I got a call from Brodie Wubben, who said he was the co-owner of Goldeneyes Retrievers. I explained Patsy’s medical problems and the high cost of treating her and told him that they should refund the money we paid for her. He refused to state that they would refund our money. He insisted that we return Patsy and claimed that they would not kill her. I told him that no decent human being would return a dog to a place that turned a dog into a walking skeleton and a cowering wreck; that she would not be returned; and that this was completely nonnegotiable. He went on and on about “making this right” and “working out a solution.” But he would not commit to anything specific.
Brodie told me to send him a copy of the paperwork that showed who Patsy’s parents are. What kind of breeding operation would not know that already?
Brodie claimed that we did not need to spend all that money on pancreatic enzymes because we could get a dog food with the enzymes “built in.” This is utter nonsense and I told him so. There is no substitute for the pancreatic enzymes that Patsy needs.
Brodie also claimed that it’s very common for kennel dogs to be very underweight and have chronic diarrhea and that this is normal.
Brodie could not understand me when I told him that Patsy would be devastated if we sent her away. It did not make any sense to him that someone would care so much about a dog’s happiness that they would give up $900 if necessary to keep the dog safe and happy.
Brodie offered to give us another dog if we returned Patsy. We do not want another dog from a kennel that sold us such a sick dog, and thinks it’s normal for kennel dogs to be very underweight and have chronic diarrhea.
More importantly, Patsy is not a chair with a fabric defect, to be thrown away and “replaced.” She is a living animal—a dog who loves us very much, who literally jumps for joy much of the time here, who has finally received the medical care she needed for a long time, who will always be very well cared for here, and who would be devastated and most likely killed if she were returned as if she were a piece of trash.
Brodie told me to send him the vet records. If they had sent us a dog who looked healthy and told us they would refund our money after receiving the records, without demanding that we return the dog, this would be reasonable. But none of this has happened. Patsy was obviously very sick when they sent her to us. Since they don’t need proof that she has medical problems, they are stalling.
On August 27, 2016, Brodie texted me that if we send him the vet records, they will refund our money “if it is deemed appropriate” and “if it is something that is genetic and could have been foreseen.” And they have never backed off on their demand that we return Patsy to them even if we do send them the vet records.
I told Brodie that we will send him the vet records (which include proof that we had Patsy spayed) if he clearly states that (1) Goldeneyes Retrievers will not require that Patsy be returned in order for a full refund to be issued; and (2) a full refund will be issued if we send him the records which indicate that Patsy has pancreatic insufficiency. He has never made these statements, so there is no reason for us to waste our time sending him the vet records.
We know we have no chance of getting a refund. We can only hope that people who are looking for a Labrador Retriever will read this and get their dog from a reputable shelter or a breeder who does not consider it normal for dogs to be very underweight and have chronic diarrhea, and who will promptly refund the buyer’s money if the dog has serious medical problems—without demanding that they return the dog.
