Susan Henkel is an Animal Hoarder. She went from 17 horses to 43 of her personal horses in the time that I was attending. They adopt BLM mustangs because they do not come and do Barn Checks. She is also not a US citizen, so her "husband" had to adopt them. Her daughter Becky Henkel takes part in the Youth Mustang Challenge through the BLM. Every time, they bring home a new mustang that is never worked with again after the show. Twice a year adds up to a lot of mustang hoarding. Last count I heard was 43 of her own.
There was a small stall with over Four Minis together, and they were standing on about five FEET of fecal matter packed down. There was also a goat who had a ripped off leg hanging off, and it never got vet care.
Stalls are never cleaned out. I opened a stall of a lesson horse one day and it was hip deep that I had to dig out. Mustangs that she adopted from the BLM are then kept in small temporary pens, never get used, never get outside. One was unable to walk at all, was never vetted.
When I was in attendance, there was eight horses (client and her personal) who passed away from Sepsis/Bacterial Pneumonia from the stalls. One lady there lost a foal, one lady lost a beautiful Draft Horse, Several of Susan's Mustangs, a lesson horse, and my quarter horse all gone because of a lack of housekeeping. When horses were ill, she refused to tell owners in many cases. She did not want vets to call ASPCA. All of these deaths didn't change the way she did her housekeeping.
When I were there, they were hiding their puppymill upstairs. They had over 25 jack russel terriers, mostly in cages. They also had many other breeds of dogs in cages under their stairs. They started from one brother and one sister, and they bred from there. Imbred over and over, brother/sister father/daughter. The Jack Russels have birth defects. Many couldn't walk. The barn dog was very elderly and needed vet care, and she had Mange the entire duration of my time attending there.
One time I opened the tack room to put a saddle away and I counted over fifty cats of all ages swarming around. Imbreeding over and over, just like the dogs. They were fighting over a tiny can of cat food. Ive never seen anything more traumatic. She also has many pet snakes, bunnies, and other small animals.
Sickness was always in the barn. Horses would have stuffy noses all the time, and susan would say it was a Spring Cold. I later found out from a boarder that it was in fact much more contagious illnesses. It was passed over and over because she did not vet her horses.
The only horses she keeps in good shape/weight is the horses that are shown for 4H Shows and for her Cowboy Mounted Action Shooting, Mid-Ohio Murauders CMSA. She wants everyone to think they are a great choice for lessons, boarding, leasing, but in fact... there is more to the story.
Her lesson horses are used to the point that they are exhausted. One has severe heaves (unvetted) beacuse it is kept in a small pen in the arena dust. The lesson horses are then leased out to double dip in the profits. All one step from Exhaustion.
One time I witnessed her breeding a clients beautiful stallion to her own mare without the owners consent. That is illegal.
I also witnessed Susan using Client Horse Drugs for their own horses on several occaisions. She used a client's elderly horse's expensive arthritis medicine on their own 4H horse because it was injured because they injured it leading up to the state fair. She also used client Banimine on her own horses for Colic, and Client Antibiotics to get rid of her own horse's sickness. If only these clients had a clue the amount that she had stolen from them.
I also witnessed her stealing tack, horse blankets, and saddles from her clients.
During the duration, I noticed a group of three horses who had just shown up with no story. They all seemed very tramatized. Later came out from authorities, these three were in fact stolen from their owners fields in southern ohio, all on the same day that they arrived at Susan's. I never would have thought they were horse theives. Beware.
Susan ended up getting Evicted from Kaleidescope Falls property from Poor Conditions and Non-Payment. We also heard that she owed several clients thousands of dollars.
Everytime the Authorites get on her tail, she flees. In the last six months, she has fled to Fredericktown (Suffolk Farm), Columbus (Liberty Farms), and now Sunbury. Her puppymill/Cat breeding is taking place in Marengo in a camper in the Cardinal Campground. She still had every cat and dog. She bragged to a past client that she has her horses spread over Four Properties so that the humane society will not catch her. Susan had changed her name from Susan Henkel to Katherine Burrows to get someone to rent to her.
I believe the Humane Society is tired of searching for her animals. It's a witch hunt. They catch her... she only shows them her 4H horses and doesn't mention the other thirty horses that are in bad condition. They also have no budget to take on 43 horses, over fifty cats, over 25 dogs, and snakes in this small town.
She was residing in New York, then Ohio. She has fled from authorities in Ross County, Pike County, Fairfield County, Franklin County. Chilicothe, Marengo, Sunbury, Delaware, Columbus. Central Ohio. I'm sure there is more.
She did tell one client that she wasn't even from England and that she moved here from Canada, and that she has to remember to do her English Accent.
Most years she takes part in the Ohio State Fair, Little Brown Jug, Delaware County Fair, Morrow County Fun Shows, Fredericktown Fun Shows, All Horse Parade, Mid Ohio Murauders, CMSA. She is also a member of the side saddle club of ohio.
Last time we heard, she is at the following address renting another barn. KILBOURNE RD in SUNBURY is where she is operating business now. Boarders, lesson families, lease clients, beware. If you are renting out a barn, do a google search. Susan Henkel is not able to be trusted.
