Being from out of the area, what was planned to be a nice day of shopping, turned into me being assaulted by one of the managers at Canton Trade Days, aka First Monday Trade Days, in Canton Texas while taking a picture of my wife and 6 year old son walking in front of some of the businesses to document our time traveling. I was firmly grabbed by the arm and dragged into one of the shops, being told that there were a couple of people that wanted to meet me over and over again when I asked what was going on, and then finally was pushed behind the counter in one of the businesses, where they demanded that I delete all of the photos and videos off of my iPhone. After showing the owner of the businesses I was dragged into the one photo I took of my wife and son, she said that she was surprised that the manager assaulted me because usually they profile and target Asian people because they take photos of vendor's products and make "knock-offs" back in China, but clearly I was a white American and this usually doesn't happen to people of "my kind". They informed me that it is "illegal" to take pictures within the city limits of Canton. After speaking with the Mayor of Canton, I have verified that this is NOT true.
I have filed a report with the Police Department in Canton and pressed charges against the offenders, but considering that the city has a vested interest in this event, it will be interesting to see what ends up happening or if they will try to cover it all up. Fortunately there are attorneys and social media platform to help reveal the truth.
It would be my suggestion, for your own safety, that you do not go to Canton Trade Days, especially if you are of the Asian culture.
