I come to work on Friday, the 13th of November 2015 and lo and behold, someone smashed my exterior sign. Judging from the height, it must have been a full-sized truck like the ones commonly used for deliveries. No one had left their contact info (typical) and none of my neighbors saw anything (unusual), but a friend of mine passing through the area saw that it was a Ferma Foods truck but didn't catch the license plate number. The grocery shop a few doors down from me gets their produce by truck and (reluctantly) provided me a list of their vendors. Even though the grocery shop was closed at the time, it was likely during a standard delivery run when my sign was hit.
The culprit fingered, I contacted Ferma Foods directly and when I stated my case, the receptionist was obstinate from the word go and immediately given me the runaround. I left my contact info, but no one called back. I was told to contact the head office in Toronto, and of course they disputed the incident. I gave them the time frame of the incident (between the time I left work the previous night at 9:00PM and the time I came in at 11:00AM) and was told that according to their GPS tracking records none of their trucks were in the area during that time frame (I think they're lying to cover their asses), but they admit that they sometimes use unmarked trucks to make deliveries, which would complicate things.
After argiung back and forth,I was told that their insurance company would be contacting me and they never did. In the meantime, I had to call my sign repair guy as the thing was in danger of falling off and due to the extensive damage, I had get my sign replaced and pay the expenses out of pocket. It came to $800.00 but only because I was friends with the guy, otherwise it would have cost me more.
Other merchants have had similar incidents in the past, but now all the delivery trucks go through the back of the mall except for these guys who use the front despite my landlord repeatedly warnings them not to. I check whenever their trucks pass by. We'll see if their records match mine.
