10. Hip Hop Conventions - If you were ever dumb enough to go to a Hip Hop convention in the last 5 years you probably feel stupid for going to it. The moment you walked into the convention, after wasting your money to get in you realized that you had been took. Hip Hop conventions were invented by music promoters to make money. There are number of these that continue to operate and they are all scams meant to make the promoter money.
Do not ever, ever attend one of these conventions thinking you are going to network. You cannot accomplish anything when everyone in the room is trying to network with everyone else who is a nobody. Major Record labels do not go to these conventions and if there is a representative from a major label there, it is part of the hook to get you to pay to come.
The major label representative got paid to be there and he is nothing more than a glorified secretary and has zero juice to sign anybody. Hip Hop conventions were never relevant in Hip Hop and they never will be but I want to warn the indie artists that just don't know any better. Don't waste your time or money going to a Hip Hop convention ever.
Never do "Pay to Play" open mics or pay to showcase! Flag the posts and boycott the clubs that allow them!
There's not suppose to be open mic's! You're supposed to get paying gigs! An "audition night" for young musicians is fine.
If you pass the audition, you get the paying gig! The club owners and the promoters have been telling you lies there is no "exposure," no "industry people" in the audience. Can you think of one person who got a paying gig or record deal as result of playing an open mic, songwriter showcase.etc.? "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem."
The honest open mics are run by clubs not by promoter scumbags! Instead of working day jobs promoters feed of starving artists! F**k them! Club run open mics usually give you free drinks and or free food!
Honest club run open mics would never even dream of charging the performers! They know we keep the audience that paid to get in drinking and eating! That's the premise of the open mic! Never use booking agents either and boycott the clubs who allow them!
Flag their posts! Book gigs directly from the clubs you want to play! Booking agents are just like greedy promoters and make money off you! They only middle you to the same clubs!

Promoters use Eventbrite to sell tickets to events and festivals. During Covid, promoters were forced to either cancel or postpone events. However, Eventbrite would have suffered major financial losses allowing promoter to give refunds. As a promoter myself, Eventbrite shut down my ability to give refunds to good people and falsely continued to advertise my event and collected money for ticket sales. For almost 1 year I have sent emails, letters, and even showed up to their empty office.
They have not paid for tickets sold or refunded those that should have been refunded. They are unethical and fraudulent. THEY DO NOT HAVE A CUSTOMER SUPPORT NUMBER. If you are a promoter that is selling tickets on Eventbrite, STOP BEFORE YOU BECOME A VICTIM. If you are a customer buying tickets for a festival, AVOID USING EVENTBRITE TO BUY TICKETS.
