Etceteras is not accessible to people who use a mobility device such as a wheelchair or scooter. One day in early January 2017, as I shopped for a winter hat, a clerk in Scotia Centre Mall recommended Etceteras a block away. Her enthusiasm was obvious.
The weather was cold, -20 C degrees. The wind was brisk. Yet I drove my scooter the one block to Etceteras – and could do nothing but sit shivering on the sidewalk.
I could not get from the sidewalk into the store. The entrance of Etceteras has two wide steps, but no ramp. Later I checked Google Maps to determine if there was an alternate flat entrance, but there is none.
Shame on Etceteras, and shame on the Scotia Centre clerk (whose amusement I now understand). I am a physicist and don't appreciate my time being wasted. I am also an advocate for the physically disabled, and next time I see the Scotia Centre clerk I will quietly inform her: "If there is a rocket scientist in this room, it would not be you."
Note: If you check Google Maps, the feature you need is Google Street View. Google took those photos years ago in Saskatoon (as elsewhere). Since then, Etceteras has moved. As I witnessed in person, Etceteras is still within the same city block, but now takes the location with the two broad steps.
