Heating Protection plan

Be very careful when getting a heating protection plan with Enercare.

My complaint is not about the plan itself its about Enercares tactics; I scheduled my annual cleaning, the technician came and began to state my furnace room was not up to code as it vented to a room. I explained the room is not a bedroom and the basement is vacant. The technician called his office, spoke in another language I could not understand then at the urging of the person on the phone proceeded to write me up an infraction that said if I do not fix the issue my gas will be shut off. Shortly after Enbridge gas received a notice from Enercare (yes they reported me). I complied by venting to a room right beside the other one and got a gas tech to sign off. The gas tech told me they guy from Enercare was just being a jerk, the issue wasn't dangerous/hazardous and in the industry that's what Enercare is known for doing- they write you up for something so that homeowners can go through them for the repairs and they get the $$. I thought I was getting a furnace cleaning and got a $1500 unnecessary repair. Beware!

The Enercare contract for a hot water heater was promoted in October 2010 door to door. It contained an attractive monthly rate ($14.49) and the first 3 months were free. The monthly rate has increased dramatically to $17.99 as of March 2017. This increase is greater than CPI. In addition, cancellation of the contract and buy out of the water heater is $845. The contract extends until the end of life of the water heater, approx 15years. A water heater of this type cost approximately $1600 (2010 $) installed. At this point, the cost of the water heater is approx $1300 plus buy out. Clearly the water heater will cost over $3000 as it reaches the end of life.

Back in 2012 we had a water heater installed by a company called ecosmart. This company either bough out or renamed to Enercare. Just recently we tried to buyout our rental and they quoted us a figure of $ 819.26 for an almost 4 year old heater. Also when we signed up first our rental fee was 13.99 plus GST. now it has raise up to 33.67 almost double. I have been told by Enercare that the only way to back out is to purchase the heater. Anyone dealing with this company in the future should avoid them at all cost. I have filed a report to the better business bureau and also CBC Marketplace. I want as many people to be warned about this company so they either change businesss practices or go under. This company has also either bught out or joined Direct Energy So beware they may become even more agressive.
