My Experience with ERX Renovations from Charlotte, N.C. On the week of April the 6th 2017 about 1:30 in the afternoon, we had a storm which caused the biggest tree in Wingate to fall upon my home at in Wingate, N.C. I was in the den rocking my great grand baby when we hear an awful loud noise. It sounded as if an airplane had crashed into the house.
We got up and began checking the house to see what had happened. Tim Schwab was with us and he was witness to all that I am saying. He rented a house my late mother had for over 10 years and was staying in the evenings with us because of someone stalking my grand daughter Ashley. The word in town was that this tree was the largest in our area. It was approximately 100 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet around.
It appeared that the wind just lay the tree down on top of the house and crushed two bedrooms, a hall and a bathroom.
We could see the heavens above us in the two bedrooms. My daughter happened to be at the University beside us and came over quickly. She looked up renovation companies for she could tell this was serious.
She chose ERX because they were local. I called them and spoke with Mr. Walter Covington. He was nice and tried to calm me down as the baby still in shock screamed with fear. His words were: " Mrs. Shearin, please calm down for we can fix it all just like it was before and you will not have to lift a finger.
We will take everything out and put it in a weatherized building so no mold or rain can get in. We will come and see what we need to do and start as soon as possible. If you know a tree removing company please call them. We don't have anyone to take it off the house. Once off the house we can put a tarp over the open spaces and work quickly to have it finished.
I gave him our residence and ask them to please come asap. Tim knew a man who cuts trees so he called Rick Boon Tree Service. He came and worked three days getting the tree cut and moved off the house. He then cleaned up the mess and was paid $8,500.00 to do the job. I called Walter Covington and told him the tree was off and to please hurry with the tarp for the weather was calling for lots of heavy rain in the week. Mr. Covington, Ben Blackburn, Rick Barrett. and Juan Esqiival, the project manager all came to look and the damages.
Mr. Covington re assured me that he would make it like new and his workers were professionals. When I got the first check from Jackie Privitte from Travelers Insurance company they wasted no time in coming to my house to get it personally. I wondered why they just didn't wait until I sent it to them. I found out later they didn't have the funds to begin the project and then used my money on another project. They were using money I gave them to finish other projects. Then when they got more money they would start on mine.
Brandon Pressley, the contractor came and put the tarp on the house then left. For six weeks the tarp stayed on the house in the blistering sun. I kept in contact with them until they became upset with all my emails. I wanted to know when they would be starting. They sent Juan to assure me they would be coming soon. Then it happened. It began to rain and the tarp began leaking. I called them and they sent two workers over. By then it was raining inside as much as it was raining outside. They gave me two blue plastic buckets and told me to catch as much as I could they were leaving.
I was bewildered. I was standing in water, the carpet was soaked, the walls were soaked, everything in the house was soaked. Of course I called and emailed them daily. Nothing was happening. I had heard the insurance adjuster tell an associate that " we will be here for a long time!" Jackie was new and I do believe they low balled us on the damages.
She gave us an estimate of $27,000.00 but did say if they needed more she would work with them. The men from ERX said it was a $60,000.00 job and they would send invoices to Travelers if they needed more. Months passed. I had stood my ground and now they were all pissed because it was their fault and they had been found guilty. Juan, the project admitted that no one had supervised the tarp.
They have too many Chiefs and few Indians. The people they hire are off the street. Most are illegal and will work for little. None were professionals. None were experts. They asked for another $10,000.00 to begin. Time went by and no one came. They were driving their huge new trucks that would take a ladder to get into the thing but they were not paying their help. People were quitting right and left because of non payment.
Everyone was telling me to fire them and hire someone else but I tried to be as patient as I could. Time passed and the construction workers came to rebuild the bedrooms, the attic and things that they did. They did a good job. Then after they left the roofers came. They had to do a complete house roofing because it was not matching.
Here I wanted to let you know we found out later they put new tile over rotten wood and didn't say a world. We found this out after the fact. The nails were not holding anything and when it rained the tiles bucked up and slid sideways. It remains like that to this day. Weeks passed and they came for more money. They were running out of money for my house from doing work on others houses. When they did not get paid I was put on hold. Finally Juan brought samples of carpet for me to look at.
I then thought it was going to pick up and things would finally move quickly along. Not so. The carpet company was out of that color so we waited. We waited and waited. Finally the carpet people came at 6:00 pm and said they were here to put in the new carpet. I said "Why you can't do it this late!" They said they could so I said well go ahead. They did it but did not but any ticking in places where they should have put it. Another job left unfinished. Then the painters came asking for samples of paint. I told them the colors and what walls were previously painted with oil paint and those that were flat painted.
After a few weeks they came to begin. They painted flat paint over the oil paint. I was furious for I had specifically told them which to paint. The owner came to see it. The end result was all he could do was put a second coat of flat over the oil and hope it stayed. GREAT! It hasn't and it won't. In the meantime they decided to tear up the patio and move all the concrete and iron awnings that surrounded the pation. In doing so they took up all my monkey grass and took it all to the dump. They then sent a man with a load of red mud to put in the patio space. That was a nightmare. It rained and the red mud still runs down my driveway into the back yard. To this day it is sitting there untouched. They finally put a net with stakes to hold back the dirt. It still is washing down the driveway. This was done to keep me from knowing that they had already decided not to complete the patio. They knew this for months ahead and never said a work.
In January I got a letter from ERX stating they were breaking their contract and would do no more work here. I could not believe my eyes.. I had waited for almost a year and now they were breaking the contract. I became angry and emailed him back saying I was going to break theirs since they breeched theirs the first few months with the tarp incident. Oh I got the letter in January but it was written in December of 2017.
They kept telling Travelers Insurance company that they were waiting for a final check. She refused to answer them all the while reviewing their invoices. Most were fraudulent. They also asked that their name be put on the final check along with mine. Well that was it. I told her not no but Hell NO! I needed this money to replace lamps, bedspreads, comforters, hurricane lamps, pictures, and a whole list of missing and broken items.
My mink coat disappeared and so did my Wallace Baroke set of 72 piece silver. both worth over $4000.00 each. Their workers took all they could and more. I am left with nothing.and my house is a patchwork job done by idiots calling themselves experts. In October I believe Matt Lalley, a new contractor called and asked to come and see what needed to be done and that he would assure me it would be done. He came, talked out of both sides of his mouth and left. I have never seen him since.
I have not spoken to anyone since I think it was November. When they found out I had the letter breaking the contract they immediately started sending me letters that they were going to put a lien on my house. turn me in to the credit bureau, stop my check from social Security which by the way is all I have. Then they did the lien and sent me the letter I gave you.
The last I got was the lawsuit papers. This week. May 2017. It has been a year and my house is still in need to repair. They took valuable items and collectible painting from me and left me with a mess. I hope and pray I can get my money for those things back for I know those took them. There were about 7 here taking things out the first day. They put things in the pods and left with my things in their vehicles. I almost caught them. I had them take some clothes out that were small sizes and put them on the floor in the storage room.
I was going to have them take them to the goodwill. Something told me after they left to look through the things. They had taken all my leather jackets and coats and put them in the middle of the stack. If I had told them to take them that day they would have all of my winter jackets. I have expensive things. I might be poor but I have kept my expensive items for my children.
They are a rag tagged bunch of thieves. How they came up with the figures on the papers they sent is a mystery. They just put in whatever they want to. I pray to God that you can keep me from losing my home and all my valuables. I'm too old to go through all of this and I have no one to help me with all of this.
We found out since this all happened that they took a silver goblet full of Ashley's gold jewelry. I had given her pieces of gold worth thousands of dollars. There is not a trace of it. They are mad because I would not give them the last check for the 8500.00 I used all of it. I had to buy a new set of kitchen appliances. They all decided to stop at one time. Then I spent the rest on things I had to replace. My bedspreads and comforters were still in the zipped containers, never opened. If you go shopping to king sized bed things you will be shocked that one flat sheet is $100.00 and the bottom is $150.00. Bedspreads and comforters and $300.00 and up. I had expensive ones but I had to replace with cheaper one.
