As comforting it is to have health insurance for my cat, the rate increases are atrocious. I insured my pet a year ago, passed all of the inquiries and waiting periods, paid on time every month, and this week, I received an email explaining that my monthly payment will be increasing by almost twenty bucks for this coming year.
When I called and asked about it, the representative explained that the rates increase by 25-35% per year due to the pet's age. Let me repeat that: 25-35% PER YEAR. At this rate, my cat's health insurance will cost more than my own health insurance next year.
I expressed that this policy, by their underwriters, is egregiously excessive and she replied that I could reduce the monthly payment by adjusting my policy to a higher deductible or reduced coverage. I am already searching for a new company to insure my pet as I won't be keeping Embrace unless they have some flexibility on their monthly payments without reducing my coverage.
Unless you plan on paying exorbitant amounts of money to cover your animal, I would strongly suggest shopping around for a plan that is not so deceptively inflationary that it borders on usury.
