Only about 12% of American adults say they will even consider any sort of sales work, and that’s typically thinking of standing at a cash register in a retail store waiting for customers to bring up their choices which is hardly selling. It’s around 3–5% that will actually do the tough work involved in selling anything, that’s why the compensation is usually much better and tied directly to performance unlike most employees (who are terrified of being paid for their actual results.) Sales people, like managers and entrepreneurs (a great deal of crossover there), have a "high tolerance for ambiguity” while the other 80% of the population have a low tolerance, they want certainty and security at usually a quite high personal cost. You may find your best salespeople are ones who’ve tried selling intangibles (life insurance, financial planning, services, etc.) and would be delighted to be able to sell a visible, touchable, usable product (much easier) to people who arrive on the car lot at least considering a purchase rather than cold-calling people at home or work. 239 Views ·
