My husband retained Ellaretha Jones for a child custody matter involving his son from a previous relationship. Attorney Jones took a $2000 retainer and did absolutely nothing. He could not get her on the phone. A court date had been set and after numerous attempts to get in contact with her prior to the hearing to prep for court, she contacted him the day of court and said she was filing a continuance. Meanwhile the sitution between my husband and the opposing party was growing more and more strained. Ultimately, we had to fire her and get another attorney. She did not return the retainer, stating that the entire amount had already been used. All of the documents that were filed were drawn up by the opposing counsel and she did not file any documents on his behalf other than a motion for continuance. We didn't do pre-hearing prep, she didn't answer calls, and we never went to court, so I would like to know how the retainer was exhausted. When asked, she said she admits she does not keep good books but the retainer had been used. Legally she is required to provide us with a statement but we never received one.
Because the situation was escalating and my husband did not have good representation we ultimately had to hire another attorney to handle the matter. The $2000 we paid was not returned and we had to pay another attorney. Besides the financial strain this put on us, the biggest strain was on my husband's son, who was hanging in the balances during this whole ordeal. It is one thing to be bad at your job, but when your work involves families and children I don't know how she sleeps at night.
Do not use Ellaretha Jones to represent you on any matter. She is unprofessional, she does not respond timely to correspondence, and she doesn't appear to be an advocate for fathers who want to be more than weekend dads.
