Dr. Jonathan Gording Optometry Reviews

  • Dec 10, 2019

I went to Dr. Gording for an eye exam and progressive glasses. The Varilux x series. The lenses cost 810.00. The exam was another 215.00 making the total I paid was 1025.00. I should have been given a copy of my prescription whether I asked or not. It's the law. I wasn't given a copy.

Then when I brought my own frames I was charged an extra 10 dollars because I didn't buy frames from him. When I picked up the glasses and put them on they seemed good but later that evening I was at the store and was trying to read some labels on items on the store shelf but the words were blurry. I went back and told them about it and they said I have to learn how to use them.

I have been wearing progressives for a long time and i never trouble before, which I told them. Then they said I was the only person who had trouble with the intermediate range. It's always the distance or near that is the problem. They said they didn't know why I was having this problem.

They tried adjusting them. It seemed better at first. Later that day I was trying to trace a wire under the hood of my vehicle. All the wires were blended together. Out of frustration I moved the glasses around on my face and that is when I noticed that when I lifted them up off my nose and held them up I was able to see clearly.

Progressive lenses are supposed to have 3 ranges of vision distance, intermediate (which means the range of vision that is an arms length away), then reading which is close up. I had to look through the reading part of my glasses to see things that were in the intermediate range. I went back and told them what I discovered while I was trying to see the wires.

They actually told me that "these glasses were not meant to do wiring". Then they said, "first it was the things on the shelves now it's the wiring what's next?" That statement caused me extreme anxiety. I felt like they are trying to take the focus off of the problem I was having and nitpick on the descriptions I used to try to help them better understand what was blurry. The wires and the store items are 2 different situations that describe the same problem. I need my reading portion of the glasses to see things at an arm's length.

They decided to redo my refraction. That sounded good to me because the during the first exam I was only given 2 lenses to decide what was clearer and then it was over. The second exam was done properly. The first exam should have been done that way. If it had been he would not have had to adjust my prescription. He also said he wanted to try a different design than the current one.

I guess I was the only one that heard him say that because when I got the glasses back I asked what design they decided on but I was told that they were still the same design and that wasn't the problem. The change in prescription made my distance and my reading better but the intermediate was still blurry unless I lifted the glasses off my nose.

They said there is no reason I should be having this problem because all the measurements were correct. They said the only thing they could do was offer me a pair of single vision glasses. That would not help me at all because I need the reading part of the prescription for more than just reading.

I asked if a different size frame might make a difference. They said no. I asked what if they raised the line where the progression starts. They said that would affect my distance. I asked for my money back so I could go someplace else and they said no. And they treated me like it was my fault I was having this problem. They only option they offered were the single vision glasses.

I posted a negative review. The response was all about them and what I said in my review but not a word about the reason I wrote the review or the fact that I gave them 1025.00 and received glasses that I couldn't use.

I reached out to Essilor of America which is the manufacturer of the lenses to try to find out why I was having this problem. They kept telling me I would have to talk to my provider. Then they said they had no way of knowing without the measurements. So I asked them if they would contact my provider for the information.

I filled out the paperwork they sent and they got the measurements and said they would be happy to do my lenses over. They told me to go to rite aid and buy nose pads which would raise the glasses. They said to wear them like that to see if it would affect my distance.

I did what they asked. I had to double the nose pads on each side. It worked so I emailed them to tell them it worked and ask what the next step is. The email I got back was them telling me they would not be able to help me due to multiple negative reviews that I posted. I posted one review and it was on Dr. Gording, not essilor and everything I said in the review was the truth.

The other reviews they are referring to was my responses to Dr. Gordings response. So I wrote a negative review on Essilor stating what I just said and I got another email back, which from my understanding is, they are saying that they can't help me unless I go through Dr. Gording and its Dr. Gording who is refusing to fix this because of the negative reviews I wrote. A negative review should not be able to be used as a reason to get out of fixing a problem that they should have had the knowledge to fix to begin with.

I went to another place and started from scratch because I had to get glasses that I could see out of. Since I was not given a copy of my prescription from Dr. Gording, I don't know if it is the same as the one from the new place. The same problem happened at the new place but they said it might take time but they would find out what needed to be done.

It turned out that I was right about the frame size making a difference. I was also right about raising the line where the progression starts. I can finally see. At this point I just want my money back from dr Gording and he can have the glasses back.

That is what an honest professional would do if they cannot do what they are being paid to do. If Dr. Gording really cares about his patients he will make this right and if he make this right I will update all my reviews and reports.
