You are better off just going to the uso and connecting to the WIFI there. If you are going to get it then do yourself a favor and save some money by buying the 30 dollar package because it is all the same speed.
I pay over $160 month for Internet while living in Afghanistan. Thats right, $160 a month for speeds up too 5 mb/s. When DHI is working I can see my speeds sometimes reach 3 mb/s which I can live with. The thing that kills me is that the services seem to be down almost every other day. And when it goes down it stays down for hours on end I get a nice little email saying that I will be credited the down time but I have never got extra time at the end of my 30 day $160 purchase. This has got to be the worst service provided in the history of ISPs. What would be an easy decision for any paying customer and choose another ISP is an impossible choice for everyone living in the "Wonderful" place. See DHI is the only ISP. That's right the only provider of these services. You would think that for the 5000+ people who pay anywhere from $40-$200 a month they would have the greatest service known to man. Unfortunately for us, it is not. The "services" that are provided here are in no way justified for the outrages prices we pay.
Since DHI has been the only provider in Afghanistan, they take full advantage of this fact in how they charge for services. With the cost of internet services being so high, one would assume that the quality of service would reflect what is paid. For example: I pay $169 which is supposed to provide me a certain amount of bandwith. This could not be further from the truth.
On a regular basis the internet will go down or move to snail speeds. There have been many times that I am not even able to stream a simple YouTube video even on the lowest quality. Although, we are told the time the internet is down is added back to our plan to compensate I do not believe that to be the case. My time still expires at the end of the month period with no additional time added for my account. With no way of further investigating and no option to choose a different provider I am stuck believing what i'm told and not getting the service for which I pay.
With living in an area of hardship, having the internet to turn to at the end of each day for relaxation or enjoyment is a nice choice to have. Unfortunately, most days we have to deal with the fact DHI is either down or your speeds are incredibly slow limiting what we are able to do on the internet. For those trying to conduct schoolwork online it sometimes seems impossible when your not able to load the webpage to complete homework.
The downsides could go on forever. The service is incredibly terrible for the amount of money DHI is making off of the individuals here in Afghanistan (soldiers and contractors). Upgrades to the service and price reduction would be something to see considering it has never happened since DHI became the only ISP for us to choose.
DHI formally known as Snipe Hill is still one of the biggest rip offs for internet service only now they are charging you even more for their ridiculously slow and unreliable service. I am paying over $129 a month and my old dial up way back when was much faster.
The service is unreliable and they are supposedly always having it down to do repairs and speed it up but you never see it getting faster but it does get slower. Whatever speed you are paying for at whatever price they will charge you for, you will never see that speed.
They are taking advantage of the military and contractors who are out here because they are the only service around and they get away with it. Some people go in together and get a satalite set up and split the set up and monthly cost but for most of us that is not an option.
When you complain that your not even getting the service or the speed you are paying a ridiculous price for they do absolutely nothing at all. Recently they slowed everyones service down forcing us all to pay for higher packages of some of the slowest internet service you have ever seen in your life and nobody stops thems from taking advantage of us this way. Most of us work 12 hours and more a day so when we get off the internet is our only connection with home and you never know if it will be there or up to speed so you can talk or chat with your family. I haven't been able to chat with my little guy in over a month because of the poor speed even though I have upgraded my package twice now since they made their recent changes.
What this does for moral you just can't put into words but in the hopes of getting thru to our family or escaping our every day life here even for a little while keeps us paying and buying higher and higher packages of their poor excuse for internet service. Once I'm out of here I will never use anything they ever have to offer again as they are crooks.
