Comfort Zone Heating & Cooling Reviews

  • Dec 12, 2020

New HVAC, duct work & labor paid for. Job not completed. Comfort zone has been paid in full but has not completed job in 6 months.

Comfort Zone was hired to install new HVAC, new duct work, new supply & return connections, duct cover, electrical connections & drain, thermostat, convert duct system, tear out old system and haul off. All labor, materials were included. Original quote was $4900, Comfort Zone told us we needed all new duct work which increased quote to $7850. Unit installed in June 2020. I paid Comfort Zone $7100 in June and remaining $750 September 1st.

Mid October a TVA Energy Audit Inspector informed my husband that the job was not completed. Duct tape joining trunk lines and mechanical branch lines from the trunk line (should be sealed with mastic tape). No insulation where boots attach to branch lines (just bare metal) - should also be sealed with mastic tape. Inside the house, each boot needs caulking to make proper seal. My husband brought this to Stacy Murphy's attention as soon as he was made aware and Mr. Murphy told him he would call him back but never did. I emailed Mr. Murphy October 27th and asked him to either finish the job or issue a refund for the labor that was not done so I could get someone else to finish it before the weather turns off cold. At that time I was hoping it was an honest mistake.

I received an email back that he was told to do the job as cheap as possible and if he had known it was a TVA inspection job the price would have been much different. He said in his email he would give me a call the next day so we could discuss further. He did not call as promised. I left Mr. Murphy a voicemail Nov 5 asking him to call again. The job needed to be finished before it caused problems. Of course, I am not a HVAC installer, therefore I have to trust the business I hire to do the job correctly and completely. I would never have known the job was not finished if someone else had not looked at it. I paid Mr. Murphy a lot of money and, at that point, I just wanted the job to be finished - Mr. Murphy refused, he was more interested in dodging calls and making excuses than just finishing the job, which was confusing to me because it seemed like there was so little left to do and he had already been paid for the entire job.

He said in his email he was told to put the new unit on the old duct system, but we replaced the entire duct system at his suggestion, so what he was saying did not make any sense. We also found out, when we finally had to bring in another installer, that the return Mr. Murphy installed was not large enough for the unit he put in. It was pulling air so hard that it was so loud, it was obvious to anyone it was not right. We were told that there is a required return size for the unit and if it was too small it would pull too hard and burn the motor up in the unit. So, at first I was thinking Mr. Murphy was just not wanting to admit and fix a mistake, but now I'm wondering if he knows what he is doing at all, or maybe he just doesn't care since he has already been paid. Mr. Murphy did speak with my husband (even though I asked him to communicate with me) but was not willing to make the situation right.

I was never able to speak with him. I do not appreciate Comfort Zone cutting corners with my home because they were doing the job "as cheap as possible". I submitted a Better Business Bureau complaint, asking Mr. Murphy to finish the job or reimburse me for the work that was not done so that I could get a respectable business to finish the work. Mr. Murphy completely ignored the request and the Better Business Bureau. On December 2, we had to pay the other installer $1200 to fix the job Mr. Murphy did. We did a complete remodel and Mr. Murphy is the only business we dealt with that did anything like this. If Mr. Murphy thought we were trying to get out cheap and cut corners, he should have at least given us the option and a quote for finishing the entire job. And honestly, it looks really bad for his business that he would perform shoddy work to get out cheap and cut corners in the first place. It is very scary knowing you can hire people, pay them and months later can find out the job was not finished.

I gave Mr. Murphy the chance to make this right and he refused, completely ignoring a Better Business Bureau complaint. I know, at this point, that Mr. Murphy does not care about his customers after he gets his money, is unreliable and dishonest - I am just trying now to help other people avoid getting ripped off by Comfort Zone and Stacy Murphy. The contractor that recommended Stacy Murphy has agreed that we should sue him, I have not decided yet what I am going to do. I know it's not worth the money but businesses should not be able to treat people this way, take their money and ignore them so I am still considering it.
