Colorado Deck and Patio, LLC solicits reviews from their customers which is against the policy of the various review sites. More than that though Colorado Deck and Patio pays for perfect reviews by sending out visa gift cards. The more you write, the more they send out. Again this is against the policies of the various sites that they're soliciting reviews for. Even with this, they don't have a ton of reviews, except for on google. Google allows for their system to be easily gamed, so Colorado Deck and Patio, LLC, games that system. If you look at their Google business page today, March 2018 you'll see multiple 5 star reviews that have a lot in common. The grammar, weird word choices, the use of the full company name, the use of both employees names, Eric and Stephen and all the exclamation points.
Then look at the responses to the negative reviews, same weird word choices and grammar.
If that's not enough for you, consider that all of these reviews came in, in less than 2 weeks. Some companies have been listed for years and take that long to amass this many reviews. Still not enough? Ok how about the fact that Michael Perry is using a stock image that you can find being used on tons of sites? Or that Mary Lopez is using a photo of Georgia Toffolo from her Insta feed? When another review called out the stock image, they briefly changed the name of Michael Perry to Michael Terry and changed his photo and when a screen cap showed up, they changed it back. Then let's talk about Colorado Deck and Patio, LLC's responses to the negative reviews, there's a pattern there. If they can blame the issues on someone else, they do. They never take any responsibility for anything. They make up wild stories and then accuse people of making things up or say they don't know the person. Funny how they're never at fault, for anything.
They don't even manage to have a cohesive narrative between one response to another, one says they have only 1 negative review, another claims 2, then they bounce around between being in business 7 years and 10. They claim to have multiple employees with large families to support, there is only the owner, Stephen Jackson and his one employee Eric Johnson, who is a single guy. They subcontract their work, which they also claim they don't do, except for the one response where they say they did, so they can blame the problems on a sub-contractor. You can google Stephen Jackson and find his posts offering to hire sub-contractors to work. It's all lies. Colorado Deck and Patio, LLC claims on their website that they're about transparency and honesty and integrity, it seems pretty clear that they don't have any understanding of what those words mean. If they did, they wouldn't be posting fake reviews, or making up wild stories or outright lying in their marketing. Integrity means being accountable and those responses are anything but taking accountability. If you're researching Colorado Deck and Patio, LLC. to potentially hire them, do not trust the reviews, positive or negative, you're just better off hiring someone else, it's not worth the risk. Good people don't do what these 2 guys are doing.
We contracted with Colorado Deck and Patio, LLC to build a covered porch on the front of our home. Both Eric and Stephen repeatedly went on about how trust and integrity was important to their business, they said that's why their estimates were higher than most, because you were paying to have the job done right the first time. They touted their 5 star reviews online and talked poorly about the people who had posted negative reviews about them. We came to find out, that their talk of integrity and trust was just marketing and lies; and that those reviews are 5-stars because they offer their clients bribes for them.
Shortly after the work was completed for the porch, we asked Stephen about the permits and inspections and he admited he didn't get them. When we asked why he said because he thought it would be ok. The contract that was presented to us and signed by Stephen had a specific line item stating that Colorado Deck and Patio would obtain the required permits in the county of Arapahoe.
We do live in Arapahoe county so as laypersons we did not know that what was actually required is permits from the city of Aurora. We then went on to find out that he wasn't licensed in the City of Aurora so he couldn't even have applied for permits here.
We didn't know this because on the Colorado Deck and Patio website, under the section for "Cities Serviced," what city is at the top of the list? Aurora. Also, those positive reviews online from previous customers included one who was also in Aurora. So why would we have any doubts. But Stephen did know that he was not licensed in Aurora, which means he knew he could not get permits or inspecions for the job. So he knew he was lying to us, repeatedly, and heknew what kind of predicament that would leave us in. Meaning if the porch sustains any damage, it will not be covered by insurance because it was not permitted. Even worse, if we have a blizzard and the roof of the porch collapses and damages the front of the house, none of it would be covered by insurance.
So we began the task of getting permits pulled after-the-fact as the homeowner which required us to go on a fact-finding mission about what exactly Colorado Deck & Patio did and did not do during our project. We now know that he didn't follow the engineers plans that called for support posts to be placed inside the walls of the home. This makes that roof collapsing scenrio a rather serious concern, especially now that less than two months later we can see that parts of the facia of the house has cracked under the weight of the new construction. Also, Aurora's city code required that the whole front half of the house be re-roofed, while Stephen had only the newly added portion of the roof done and without the legally required specifications. So we are now faced with thousands of dollars of expense to have the framing done right and the roofing to be undone and redone correctly.
We still aren't sure if the concrete is going to pass inspection, they may have to bore holes or dig up parts of the yard in order to inspect the slab, since they can't see what was done. And if the concrete can't pass then it's potentially a total loss.
Yet Colorado Deck & Patio is using photos of our home all over social media for their online marketing, claiming that the inspection was passed - an outright lie. That's how much integrity means to them! We contacted them asking for the plans and the engineers stamp for the concrete so that we could move forward with the permitting but never heard back from them, they've gone silent. Of course that's to be expected, because what can they say when they didn't do the work that they comitted to do, in a legally binding contract.
I had answered an ad in craigslist for carpenters and received a reply from Stephen Jackson that stated they were in desperate need for carpenters, I went online to check out Colorado deck and patios and saw quite a number of troubling reviews , ones where NO PERMITS were pulled and NEVER were going to be pulled, then if that wasn't enough , there was an Engineers report that was ignored , creating potential structural issues . After seeing all this , I emailed Stephen and told him "thanks but no thanks" as I wouldn't work for someone who didn't pull permits and lied to home owners.. A couple of hours later I get a call from Stephen , who I have never met who then proceeds to launch into a profanity laced tirade inviting me to Castle Rock to come out and meet him in person , why? because as he put it , I was jeopardizing his livelihood as he was on a 100,000 dollar deck.. The issues in the complaints according to him were all lies without substance , these kind of people give legit contractors black eyes in the court of public opinion... So here is my advice , when you speak with any contractor and they are "licensed" , ask what city they are licensed with and call that city and ask them. The only reason fly-by-nights aren't licensed is because they probably cant pass the test for a general contractors license , and they "know how to build things", and don't need a city dictating to them how they want to see a project meet city codes , and yet they write on their contracts "we will pull all necessary permits", making them not negligent, just liars. BTW, I was a LIcensed GC with the city of Denver , carried a commercial "B" license throughout the Denver Metro area , A+ rated with the BBB, there are lots of legit companies out there, but lots more of "fly-by-nights" .
Colorado deck and patio, llc pays their clients to post reviews and then when they don't, they just post their own reviews for themselves. If you go look at colorado deck and patio's google's reviews right now march 2018 you'll see some 5 star reviews from people that don't exist. Michael perry is using a stock image and when someone called them out, for a short time michael perry became michael terry and had a new pic. Then someone posted in a review that they had a screencap and the name returned with the stock image. Then there's mary lopez who is using a photo of georgia toffolo from her instagram feed.
Notice a pattern with these positive reviews? The fact that they use the colorado deck and patio name and mention stephen and eric specifically and use multiple exclamation points? They all have weird grammar and word choices too. Then look at the responses to the negative reviews, notice anything similar with the grammar and word choices? The pattern with the negative review responses is pretty telling too, nothing is their fault and if they can't blame someone else, then they don't know who the person is and they never worked for them. But maybe the most telling is that all of these reviews are all from a couple weeks. There are businesses on google that take years to amass a few reviews, but these guys can get tons in a couple weeks. Also none of these reviews are on yelp or angieslist, only google, that should set off alarms.
