Coastal Moving Group Reviews

  • Feb 5, 2018

I contacted Coastal Moving Group via phone around March 2, 2017 for a move from Ann Arbor, MI to Avon Park, FL. I found the company on the internet and I talked to Steve who was very helpful. I told him that I had read some reviews from California and the company sounded the same as Coastal Moving Group but he assured me it was a different company because they had terrible reviews. I went ahead and booked them and on the day of my move which was Sunday, June 25, 2017 a Ryder truck showed up with two gentleman. I thought I was getting a large van such as Allied or Bekins or something like that. I had already packed my things and one of the gentleman asked me if I just wanted to have them take my under the bed shoe bag full of my shoes and he would take care of it. Some of those shoes they no longer make and some of them I have had for many years and also were purchased in Arizona. They told me the truck was going to the Chicago warehouse where they would store my items until I was ready for them to be delivered because I didn't want them to deliver my furniture and othr items before I arrived. I still had packing and other shipping to do until the end of June and I had to drive to Florida.

I arrived in Florida on Monday, July 3, 2017. I was told my furniture would be delivered to me as soon as they figured out the routing. After several days of delays and truck issues my items were finally delivered on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 by another truck, Penske, and another team. Numerous items were missing from my order and this driver told me he didn't know anything about it. The team were two Russian gentlemen and the father didn't speak English. Many of my "fragile" boxes were on the bottom of the piles of boxes and many items were broken, including dishes from family members that can't be replaced. Upon arrival they said I owed another $647.40 because my load was over weight. I had already gone to the post office in Ann Arbor and had the money orders the company said that I would need to give the drivers in Florida. They arrived around 6:00 p.m. and said I owed more money and their supervisor on the phone told me to "GO TO THE ATM." Well, the ATM only gives you so much and I couldn't get the amount they were demanding. I told the supervisor on the phone they needed to call the customer ahead of time with a revised estimate. So I had to pay them $200.00 in cash (ATM limit) and write a personal check for $427.40. They had to accept a personal check because nothing was open at 6:00 p.m.

I called David and Goliath Movers located in Lilburn, GA because they scheduled the trucks. They were surprised when I asked why the same team that picked up my items in Ann Arbor, MI didn't deliver them in Avon Park, FL. She asked if I would have preferred that arrangement and I said "yes." I didn't know that they were using brokers and the company does not inform you of that arrangement. I never would have agreed to use this company had I known they were contracting out my things on trucks.

David and Goliath Movers in Georgia said my things were probably still in the warehouse in Chicago and they would send the manager to check it out. I called another day and was told that he didn't have the time to look for my things because he was working on something else. On July 21, 2017 they did give me a claim, #3452, and I did send pictures of all the broken items and list of all the missing items. I have called David and Goliath Movers many times and my last call was on November 13, 2017 and I talked to Ashley about my lost items again and she put me on hold for 20 minutes. I called back and left a message to please return my phone call on November 13, 2017 at 4:21 and I have never heard from them at all. I also have emails they have sent me but no action has been taken to retrieve or compensate me for my missing and broken items. My missing items are listed below:

1) Black floor lamp. 6) Under bed shoe storage full of shoes that I can't replace.

2) Desk Chair 7) Many damaged furniture items and crushed boxes that resulted in breakage of items.

3) Black antique piano stool my mom gave me before she died in 2010.

4) Native American rug that measure 8 ft. x 5. ft.

5) Ricca vacuum cleaner

I have paid a total of $3,665.33 for this move and I would never do it again. I still don't have my items and it has been a very frustrating and exasperating experience for me. Next time I will use a U-Haul truck.

When this Coastal moving guys came for the pickup to Boise ID, they came in the morning and we showed them all the items, what all they needs to take for moving. So they started working and packing all the items in boxes and all of a sudden in the afternoon they stopped working by saying that the stuff can't fit in the space on which we took the contract at the beginning. At that time lot of discussion has happened over the phone (with his managers from Coastal moving group and as well as with Revolution moving systems company people) and almost 3-4 hours got wasted there itself without any work. They created/brought the stress situation on me. like will you agree to pay extra or else we'll remove all the stuff which is already in the truck and they'll go off.

M Even I agreed for that extra payment which they quoted for moving all of my stuff. Since it became very late they are in a rush in loading the items into the truck. By the time they done with loading it became very dark. Finally during the payment and the paper work time, I don't have a way to go and check whether the lead person has mentioned all the loaded items correctly in the list which I'm signing. Even before signing the agreement also I checked with him clearly whether he listed out all the items without missing any single item which he loaded in the truck. He said that he listed out everything and didn't miss any single item and I trusted his words and his work, so I signed the agreement and paid the agreed amount and they went off.

Those guys who came for the delivery are so irresponsible that they didn't even check whether they loaded all the items from the warehouse into the truck correctly. Even that driver clearly stated to me that few items were not loaded from their warehouse into the truck and he marked the same in the household goods delivery inventory list as well. But still they're so confident that they can deliver the items even though many big items are missing. At-least they didn't inform us anything before starting from the warehouse. They didn't even mention about the missing items before the payment. After the payment is done, once after downloading all the items then we asked about the important big and costly items and then they said that they didn't load those items into the truck from the warehouse, until then they didn't even said anything about those missing items to us. Really such an irresponsible and unprofessional behavior those people has.

The items what all we are missing now are the items which those movers helped us in packing into those boxes during the pickup. And they are clearly aware that which item is packed in which box. It also looks to me like these missing items are stolen with some plan. Because here I'm missing all my brand new unused items and costly items which are in good condition.

Upto my remembrance I’m missing the below mentioned items.

Missing items:

1) Samsung 65" LED TV

2) Brown luggage bag( Which has my wife's costly and memorable wedding attires and brand new costly bed sheets brought from India)

3) Dresser back metal attachments( which holds the mirror and the bottom body together)

4) Brand new costly comforter

5) White plastic box with 3 drawers ( containing all my bank checks and one Hard disk which has all my educational and personal very important docs, old memorable pictures which I don't have any backup with me right now and has lot more stuff which I didn't remember exactly)

6) Metal laptop holder with fan inside it

7) Laptop lap holder (Based with foam)

8) Kitchen Rug

9) Runner Rug

10) Door mat

11) Toiletry stand

12) Expensive Large Panda Toy

13) Facial Steamer

14) Squatty potty (Plastic)

15) Food storage cart draws

16) Hardware Tools box containing Expensive tools and lot other stuff

17) Small box with medicine kit

18) Small box with crafts and other miscellaneous items

19) Goddess worshiping prayer items

Broken Item's :-

1. Coffee Table Glass Top got totally broken into tiny small pieces.

2. Computer Desk back supporting frame got totally broken and missing wooden frames in it.

3. 2 Night stands and Dresser corner's got chipped off.

4. Missing dinning/kitchen chairs screws and holders

I contracted with Coastal Moving Group to arrange a move to North Carolina from New Jersey. Little did I know that they are only a broker. I paid them $593 to literally make a phone call to a moving company (see Out of State Movers report).

They estimated by cargo's cubic feet and told me that I was way within the 300 cubic foot minimum at 242 cubic ft. When the movers came and loaded my belongings onto the truck I was charged for 400 cubic feet. The estimate I got from Coastal included more than what was actually shipped. Coastal's contract stated the packing materials were included in the price but I was charged for them anyway. I was able to get a $24 credit for the tape.

The cargo was picked up on Thrusday to be delivered the following Thursday. From the time the cargo was picked until the day before it was delivered I was on the phone with Coastal and the actual movers. Coastal would hear my concerns and promised to get to the bottom of it but never returned my calls. I would always have to call back. Or, they would put me on hold and never come back. I was told that they were in contact with the movers but the movers would tell me that they hadn't heard from them.

A one point I was confused as to which contract I was obligated to honor as they were both different. My belongings were held hostage until I paid up.

Coastal Moving Group just takes your money, makes that phone call and washes their hands of you. Once your cargo is loaded onto that truck you are screwed. Pay up or else.
