I run a reputable and honest web + mobile development agency here in Los Angeles. Rose and Tom from Cienega Med Spa approached us to redesign and build their new website. We had great relations and rapport and we all agreed on a contract with pricing and scope for the project. This was very typical contract /project that we have delivered many times during the years of operating the agency. We always ensure that our clients understand the full scope, pricing and timelines before starting a project to make sure the job runs smoothly. The contract was signed and agreed to and we charged half up-front for half of the contract price of ~$10,000.
We started designing and developing the website as usual. Long story short we successfully delivered and launched the site a few months later. Along the way there were a few bumps and stretched timelines but this is the typical process for most of our projects. After successfully launching the website we started the quality assurance process to make sure any bugs are addressed and that the clients are 100% satisfied.
After the quality assurance process the clients were satisfied was the website was site was live, tested and done. The clients thanked us and even offered us free services at their Santa Monica location. Everything was delivered as expected and we sent the clients an invoice for the second half of the contract; another ~$10,000.
After weeks of sending followups and contacting the clients via email, in person and over the phone they kept telling us that they have issues with the pricing which was clearly laid out in the contract before starting. This issue has never happened to us after delivering a project with success and having a clearly signed contract with the pricing included. Weeks of following up and trying to recover the money that was owed to us they completely disappeared and stopped answering all calls and emails. I thought about suing them to recover the funds for my business but decided to not go through the hassle (Even though the case, terms and evidence were extremely clear). I even thought about taking down their website until the delinquent payment was resolved but also decided not to do this as I would never want our clients to experience downtime or any distrustful situations.
Our team was extremely disappointed knowing that we worked so hard on this project for months and got completely ripped off in the end. Rose and Tom are completely irresponsible and negligent of their vendors. We have never had an issue like this after working with hundreds of reputable companies like HBO, Heineken and many small-medium size businesses in the Los Angeles area. We introduced them to another vendor during the project lifecycle who also got ripped off with the same excuses (completely different contract not managed by our agency.)
Do not work with Cienega Med Spa if you are a hardworking and honest vendor! Knowing that we got ripped off for this project really bothered us and ruined the moral of our agency for a while as we scrambled to recover. All the while Cienega Med Spa was enjoying their brand new website and getting tons of bookings through the proprietary system we built for them. Our agency is comprised of the some of the hardest working, smart and honest people I know. I'm not sure how they can sleep at night knowing that they stole money directly from the pockets of an honest, small, and local business.
