Stay safe and stay away from this place. Just last month of february 2016, here are the crimes at charlie’s as verified with denver police:
Charlie’s management ignores the fact that they are breaking all the rules for many business practices to protect their customers by erasing video, deleting social media reviews, and refusing to comment on questions on failing restaurant report card when nicely asked by fox31denver’s heidi hemmat. Charlie’s is a great bar to stay away from. When legitimate complaints are filed with the denver police, denver health department inspectors, and customers using social media business rating sites, charlie’s management ignores the legitimate complaints and continues doing bad business as usual.
In April 2015, I was assaulted at the establishment (Charlies located at 900 E. Colfax – Denver, CO 80238) & phone (303 839-8890). I want to alert all customers of the following facts.
FACT: There are 16 other GLBT bars nightclubs within 4 miles of Charlies at 900 E. Colfax.
FACT: In the last 125 days (between July 4 – November 6), Charlies has had 2 violent assaults. The most recent assault at Charlies was October 4 at 1:00am (Denver Police Incident #2015577341). The second recent assault was July 19, 2015 at 1:16am (Denver Police Incident #2015406822).
FACT: The other 16 GLBT bars within 4 miles of Charlie’s COMBINED had ZERO ASSAULTS during the same time frame.
Some of which have triple the crowds Charlie’s does.
FACT: Charlie’s is the most dangerous GLBT bar in Denver according to the Denver Police crime rate incident maps.
FACT: A viscous assault occurred last April 27, 2015 causing obvious major debilitating
injuries of a Charlie’s loyal customer (ME) in their Charlie’s Lobby. The injured loyal customer (ME) later required major emergency surgery thus accruing medical bills in excess of 6 figures
FACT: The dishonest & novice new management intentionally failed to uphold their responsibilities to help the person injured on Charlie’s property.
FACT: After the vicious assault, I made all GLBT bars/nights aware of ACCEPTABLE safety measures and Denver crime statistics at all the GLBT establishments in a June 2015 mailing.
FACT: Approximately the 35 months before the vicious assault, Charlies alone more assaults than 88 percent of the other Denver 16 GLBT bars combined.
And now, during the past 4 months, Charlies has 100 percent of the assaults. The other 16 other GLBT bars within 4 miles have had NO ASAULTS.
FACT: Approximately the 35 months before the vicious assault, Charlie’s alone had more Larceny than 82 percent of the 16 other GLBT bars combined.
Charlie’s inexperienced managers are practicing bad business practices. Charlie’s is not accredited with the Better Business Bureau. PROOF: Charlies alone has had 100 percent of the assaults in the last 4 months.
FACT: The devastated victim (me) assaulted on April 27, 2015 was instantly crippled & laying on the concrete front porch desperately needing emergency medical attention. The victim even called the unexpressive doorman for help. Charlie’s had authorities shove the injured person’s “do not move injury” in the backseat of a cramped police car. THE VIOLENT AND VISCIOUS ASSAILANT IS STILL AT LARGE THANKS TO CHARLI’ES INCOMPETENT SECURITY MEASURES.
FACT: Standard National Night Club Industry standard security measures involving seriously assaulted & injured customers on Charlie’s property WHERE NOT FOLLOWED. (1) An ambulance should have been dispatched and the injured loyal customer carefully tended to & transported with his “no not move” injury with professional and trained EMTS on a gurney. (2) Industry security standards state Charlie’s managers & employees are expected to tell the truth to police investigators. (CHARLIE’S DID NOT). Standards also state to immediately identity & preserve financial transactions (credit & debit card transaction) information for all parties involved or who are believed to be witnesses. (3) Witnesses should have been detained by giving ID’S to responding officers. Video of people in and outside the club should be preserved, maintained and provided to the responding police investigators for at least 30 days at an absolute minimum. (Charlie’s destroyed that video the following week). Front door ID scanner information should have been preserved for responding police officers. It was not.
Recently, I was disheartened as within a month of my assault, Charlie’s was congratulated for having the longest running drag show in Denver as featured in the Westword’s 2015 Best of Denver Edition. Paul Rosenthal sent a letter on June 12. And on May 1, 2015, Diana Digette in her letter said “You are an important piece of vibrancy and vitality. I appreciate Diana Digette and Paul Rosenthal for reaching out to Charlies as they knew nothing of how I was violently assaulted at the Denver Divas show on April 26. If they did, I am sure no letters would have been sent to Charlies.
Charlie’s has had new management in place for the past 16 months or so. The fact that Charlies remodeled front of their building, changed interior design, added mega sound, light & fog enhancement, and remodeled the patio, does not give Charlies the right to put customer’s safety at risk by not including the standard nightclub and bar security protocols listed above. Remodeling an empty bar is easy. The inexperienced new managers are not trained in standard security video and reporting, managing crowds safely & politely, calling 911, effectively supervising employees, protecting customers who are victim of a serious assault at a Charlie’s crime scene, or in training their bartenders & door staff. I hope soon Charlie’s will instill a “no drinking while on duty” for their staff as this is standard protocol for successful bars and nightclubs. To my knowledge, the current managers have no managerial experience. Previous bartending and entertainer experience does not a manager make.
I do believe sometimes things happen for a reason. I found out recently that after I sent my first set of letters on June 17, 2015 to the Denver GLBT bars and night clubs, that by some miracle, the show that I was assaulted at “Denver Divas” has been shut down. And there has been another change in management since early September. One member of the management team alone made the decision alone to move on to bigger and better things out of state. I know I will never return to Charlies, but I certainly hope that they get their bad business decisions and personnel up to par so they can properly service their GLBT and straight clientele safely. I sincerely hope they will do what they used to do from 1990 to 2010 and to have a uniformed armed off duty Denver Police officer at the front door every Thurs – Sunday night from 8pm to 2am.
So based on this review, I would suggest not to go Charlies as they let their customer who need medical attention suffer in their cold front porch and destroy all video evidence and witness info.
