Canyon Meadows Farm and the owner Katrina Schmidt have terrible reviews on this platform and the BBB site as well. Our puppy was clearly very negelected and abused. As per the previous review(s) she is very fearful and scared.
All noises scare her and she is uncomfortable walking on harwood floors and going through doorways. Her eyes and teeth are also problems, just as described by another reviewer. How can a little puppy have so many problems? How does a puppy have plaque on her teeth? She arrived filthy too. The sweet dog had never been bathed.
She is new to us and have not had a complete health check-up as we want her to be comfortable. We had to take her in to get her eyes looked at. The vet and, her colleagues and co-workers were heartbroken to see how fearful and traumatized this little pup is. I only pray that we don't learn about more health problems.
I read about another review who shared that their dog had sever hip dyplasia. I asked about this and was assured hips were okay, but I didn't ask for evidence. Shame on me. I tried kindly reaching out to Katrina. I wanted to get some history so we could help this sweet puppy. I was not accusatory and thought maybe something happened out of her control.
After reading the revews, there seems to be a pattern and this not seem to be a "one off" . This is not a piece for furniture, but a living creature - a pet, a family member. We are not going to return her to what I believe is a house of horrors. After many, many requests, she has still not responded and we expect she never well. I just want to know more so we can do the best for this pup, who despite being abused is actually very sweet.
Fortunately, we have a very loving family without very young children who could unintentionally spook this pup. And, we have another older pup who has been an absolute angel and snuggles with her. I have actually taken off work to give this traumatized animal round the clock love and care. Many families would not be able to do this. To say our dog is not as advertised is an understatement.
I feel foolsish for not having checked out Canyon meadows farm and Katrina Schmidt before getting this dog. As a lifetime dog person, I've never experienced anyting like this and I guess I let my guard down. In my opinion, the dogs at Canyon Meadows farm and any dogs bred by Katrina and Kevin Schmidt should be rescuedby loving individuals or families and they should be prevented from raising dogs or any other animals.
I love this puppy and I'm glad she is part of our family. But my heart breaks for what she endured in her early life. I only hope that with continued loved and round the clock attention that she will be more comfortable and know that she is loved and can feel safe. I also pray that future health visits do not uncover serious health issues.
Karen and Kevin Schmidt advertised two six year old golden retriever sisters for sale on Craigslist. They are a breeding farm for many types of dogs,, and these two were not longer able to breed, so were selling them. Most reputable breeders will place their mature dogs in loving homes without trying to sell them.
The dogs photos looked so pathetic that we decided to talke a look. Katrina Schmidt was very guarded with her answers and didn't answer any questions regarding their previous health issues. We asked for their health records which she said she would provide when we came to pick them up. She was asking for $300 for each dog, for a total of $600.
The dogs appeared afraid of the breeder when she brought them in. They hovered in a corner while the breeder explained that they were scared because they are so loyal to one family, and they've had their puppies removed. She tried to sell us the notion that English cremes are like that.
She was unaware that I'd had golden retrievers for 30 years and knew she wasn't telling the truth.
When we brought the two dogs home, they were severely withdrawn, almost catatonic and frightened beyond anything we'd ever seen. We immediately took them to our vet within two days. Our vet immediately identified them as "kennel dogs," or dogs that have very little contact and spend most of their lives in a kennel. We then discovered they had some major health issues--one had kidney damage and the other had thyroid issues. They had other problems with their eyes and teeth. The vet put them on anti-depressants to help them adjust to living with a real family. These dogs could not even walk on wood floors.
We contacted Canyon Meadows Farm and Katrina Schmidt and demanded that she refund our $600. Treatment for these dogs would be well over $5,000 and she lied about their health status. She also did not provide us with their health history except the recent spaying and some shot information. The vet that did the spaying said he'd not treated them before.
Ms Schmidt refused to return the money. Subsequently I ran a Craigslist ad to see if anyone else had purchased dogs from this puppy mill and recieved well over 15 responses, including former employees. It is indeed a puppy mill where she is making a fortune off over-breeding dogs and horses.
We were ripped off from these breeders and want to warn others about their horrible place.
