Attended a weekday, midday event with colleagues & clients. Although we requested the private dining room, we were told upon arrival that the room required a nonrefundable $100 deposit. Although private rooms often have a deposit, standard practice is that this deposit is removed upon a minimum dollar amount spent. Evidently not the case at Cafe Borgia.
On principal, we declined and opted to sit in the main dining room. Tables were grouped together in the main dining area to accomodate our group of 20. Oddly, the tables (put end-to-end) were tables of varying sizes - some 4x4, others 2x2 - making for a bizarre seating arrangement. It almost felt as if we were being admonished for our decision to sit in the main dining area.
The service for many at our table was subpar, with multiple requests for drink refills going unanswered, despite the restaurant being nearly empty (weekday afternoon). Regardless, the wait staff was generously tipped both with standard gratuity plus several hundred dollars in cash. Our total bill (before gratuity) exceeded $2000.
Be warned - based on who-knows-what - you may be treated differently than other guests. When 2 from our group attempted to order a drink at the bar, they were refused, that is, unless they were willing to order more food. Considering they had just paid $2000 for food and were literally stuffed, they only wanted a drink. AFter explaining, they were again told no - and asked to order 2 more entrees. Truly bizarre behavior from the "service" industry to attempt to strong-arm paying customers for more money.
I went to Cafe Borgia yesterday for lunch to celebrate a co-workers birthday. We had a total of 16 people including a few clients. When we arrived for our reservation, and told the waitress we would like a private room, the waitress told us we would have to pay $100 non-refundable deposit to get one. The place was dead btw. I've never heard of a $100 non-refundable deposit to eat lunch so we just decided we would eat in the main seating area.
The service was horrible and they made us sit at this long table that had two "kiddie" tables at the end. We don't have any kids. Everyone there was extremely rude, we couldn't get service when we needed it and one of our clients overheard one waitress talking about how she hopes Russia nukes the entire country of Ukraine. The food also sucked, in my opinion.
My boss, who is extremely generous paid for the entire lunch which was more than $2,000. He tipped every one of the waitstaff $340 and then gave each of them another $100 bill as our staff slowly started to leave. He still had some business to take care of with one of our clients so the two of them decided to take a seat at the bar for a drink.
The bartender who was blonde, foreign and in her 30's was extremely rude and obnoxious. I think she may have been Russian. She refused to serve them a drink unless they ordered food. My boss explained to her that he didn't want any food because he just spent $2k on lunch and he wasn't hungry. The bartender said "I don't serve drinks unless you order food." I was shocked at how rude she was and the way she stormed off.
We ended up leaving after my boss complained and Karen Jesso, the owner called the office this morning looking for my boss. One of our management staff explained exactly what happened, that we felt like we were being discriminated against and that we shouldn't have to order more food in order to have a drink after spending more than $2k on lunch. Karen's response was "I guess we're just not a good fit then. You can take your business elsewhere" What kind of a business owner says that to someone?
My boss sent a buddy of his in there today to order a drink at the bar without food. He was served a drink without ordering food, no problem. If this isn't proof that these guys discriminate against certain members of the local community, then I don't know what is.
Do not support this business, Cafe Borgia should be shut down.
